The slide pins torque to 31 ft-lbs (2015+), and you must hold the pin flats with a 17mm wrench or you'll spin forever without tightening anything. Rotor hubs corrode aggressively to the 77.8mm pilot, so cleaning and anti-seize matter.

    Loosen front wheel lug nuts slightly while truck is on the ground, then raise the front end and support securely on heavy-duty jack stands. Remove front wheels.

    Never work under a truck supported solely by a hydraulic jack.

    Check brake fluid reservoir under hood and remove a small amount of fluid if near MAX to prevent overflow when pistons are retracted.

    Remove the upper and lower 13mm caliper slide pin bolts while holding the slide pin flats with a 17mm open-end wrench.

    If the slide pin sleeve spins inside the rubber boot, use the 17mm wrench to prevent tearing the boot.

    Lift the brake caliper off the bracket and support it using a caliper hanger or bungee cord hooked to the upper control arm or coil spring.

    Do not strike the wheel studs with the hammer.

    Thoroughly clean rust scale from the wheel hub mounting flange and the caliper bracket pad abutment channels with a wire brush. Apply a light film of anti-seize to the hub face.

    Do not get anti-seize or grease on wheel stud threads or rotor friction surface.

    A smooth, clean hub surface prevents lateral runout and brake pulsation.

    New Front Brake Rotor

    Clean packaging oil off the new brake rotor using brake cleaner, install the new rotor onto the hub, and secure it temporarily with one inverted lug nut to keep it flat.

    Caliper Mounting Bracket

    Apply a drop of medium blue threadlocker to the 21mm bracket bolts. Reinstall the caliper mounting bracket and torque the bolts to 130 ft-lbs (176 Nm).

    Abutment Clips and New Brake Pads

    Install new stainless abutment clips onto the bracket. Apply a light layer of brake lubricant to the clip slide channels. Install new inner and outer brake pads into the bracket.

    Ensure zero lubricant touches the pad friction surface or rotor face.

    Verify pads slide freely in the bracket clips without binding.

    Caliper Dual Pistons

    Compress both caliper pistons back into the caliper housing simultaneously using a dual-piston compressor or C-clamp across an old brake pad. Inspect rubber dust boots for tears.

    Compressing only one piston at a time will force the opposite piston out.

    Slide out the slide pins, clean old grease, inspect boots, lubricate with high-temp silicone brake grease, and reinstall into bracket.

    Use only silicone or polyalphaolefin-based brake grease; petroleum grease swells rubber boots.

    Position the caliper over the new pads and bracket. Install the two 13mm slide pin bolts and torque to 31 ft-lbs (42 Nm) while holding pin flats with 17mm wrench.

    Remove temporary lug nut, reinstall front wheels, and hand-thread lug nuts. Lower vehicle to the ground and torque lug nuts in a crisscross pattern to 130 ft-lbs.

    Hydraulic Brake System

    Pump the brake pedal firmly 3 to 5 times until pedal is firm before starting the vehicle. Check and top off brake fluid reservoir level in the engine bay.

    CRITICAL: Failing to pump brake pedal before driving will result in complete loss of initial braking power.

    Perform a gentle bedding procedure avoiding hard panic stops for the first 30 to 50 miles.

Gotchas

  • The 13mm caliper slide pin bolt threads directly into a free-floating guide pin sleeve; you must hold the 17mm flats on the sleeve with an open-end wrench or the pin will spin infinitely without loosening or torquing.
  • The front calipers are dual-piston. If you try to compress one piston with a standard C-clamp without bridging both pistons (or without an old brake pad across the face), the hydraulic fluid will pop the adjacent piston out of its bore.
  • 2015+ 4th Gen Ram 1500 trucks have an updated slide pin torque specification of 31 ft-lbs, compared to 24 ft-lbs on 2009-2014 models. Caliper bracket bolts remain 130 ft-lbs across all years.
  • Rotors frequently seize onto the 77.8mm hub center pilot from galvanic corrosion. Aggressive cleaning of the hub face and a light anti-seize application on the hub pilot are necessary to avoid runout/pulsation.

  • Failing to clean shipping preservative oil off new non-coated brake rotors before installation, contaminating the new brake pads instantly.

Dual pistons need simultaneous pressure.
