Your 2012–2016 CR-V's front brake pads and rotors are a straightforward intermediate swap. Plan on 1–2 hours, a pair of torque wrenches, and a really good impact screwdriver—Honda's rotor screws will humble you otherwise.
How Rough Is This Going to Be? Know what you're getting into.
You'll be removing wheels, unbolting calipers, pulling old pads and rotors, and installing new ones. The dual-piston front calipers need both pistons retracted at once (use a spreader tool or C-clamp), and the hub face absolutely must be wire-brushed clean or you'll have brake vibration for the next 1,000 miles. Torque specs matter here: 101 lb-ft on the bracket bolts, 37 lb-ft on the slide pin bolts, 80 lb-ft on the wheel lugs.
Save Another Trip to the Parts Store Clips, seals, fluids, and the little stuff people forget.
Loosen the master cylinder cap before you start pushing pistons back—pressure buildup will make it harder and can overflow the reservoir. Pump the brake pedal 4–5 times before you even shift into gear, or you'll have zero braking on the first application. The pad return V-springs go into tiny holes at the outer corners of the pad backings; leave them out and pads will drag.

Don't let the caliper hang by its rubber hose; it'll strain the internals. Don't skip cleaning the hub face—rust under the new rotor = vibration city. Don't compress the dual pistons unevenly or one will pop out of its bore. Don't install pads backward (friction material faces the rotor, always). And if you use the wrong grease on slide pins, you'll be back here in six months.
Procedure

Front wheels and vehicle chassis
Loosen front wheel lug nuts slightly while vehicle is on the ground using a 19mm socket and breaker bar. Chock rear wheels, lift front axle with a hydraulic floor jack at the approved front center jack point or pinch welds, and set vehicle securely onto jack stands.
Never perform service work underneath a vehicle supported solely by a hydraulic jack.
Loosen the master cylinder brake fluid reservoir cap under the hood before pushing caliper pistons back to prevent pressure buildup, and monitor fluid level to prevent overflow.

Front wheels
Remove the 19mm lug nuts completely and remove both front wheels.

Front brake caliper slide pin bolts
Turn steering wheel to point the working side outward for easier tool clearance. Unbolt the two 14mm caliper slide pin flange bolts securing the caliper body to the bracket.
Do not allow the caliper to hang unsupported by the rubber brake flex hose. Use a caliper hook.
If the slide pin spins while loosening the 14mm bolt, hold the flats of the slide pin with a slim open-end wrench.

Front brake caliper body
Lift caliper body off the bracket and suspend it from the front strut spring using a caliper hanger tool or heavy mechanic's wire.

Brake pads, return springs, and shims
Remove the upper and lower pad return V-springs, then slide the inner and outer brake pads and shims out of the caliper bracket.
Note the position of the pad wear indicator clip (typically on the inner pad) to ensure correct orientation during reassembly.

Caliper mounting bracket
Remove the two 19mm bolts securing the caliper mounting bracket to the steering knuckle. Set the bracket aside on the workbench.
These bolts are factory-torqued to 101 lb-ft and may require a breaker bar or impact wrench to loosen.

Brake rotor retaining screws
Remove the two countersunk Phillips/JIS rotor retaining screws from the rotor hat using a manual impact screwdriver and mallet.
Do not use a standard hand screwdriver or drill with excessive torque without impact shock; these fasteners strip extremely easily.
Striking the impact driver with a solid blow while applying counter-clockwise rotational preload will release thread corrosion instantly.

Front brake rotor
Pull the old brake rotor off the hub. If seized with rust, thread two M8x1.25 bolts evenly into the threaded extractor holes on the rotor hat until the rotor breaks free.
Do not strike the rotor face hard near the wheel studs if intending to keep or inspect wheel bearings.

Wheel hub bearing flange
Clean the hub mounting surface thoroughly with a wire brush or drill cup until bare metal is exposed and completely free of rust flakes, scale, and high spots.
Any debris or uneven corrosion trapped between hub face and new rotor will cause lateral runout and severe high-speed brake pedal pulsation (judder).
Apply a micro-thin layer of anti-seize compound around the center hub snout, avoiding wheel studs.

New front brake rotor
Clean protective packing oil from both sides of the new brake rotor with brake parts cleaner. Install the new rotor onto the hub and reinstall the retaining screws (tighten to 7.2 lbf-ft / 9.8 N·m).
Apply a drop of anti-seize to the screw threads for hassle-free future removal.

Caliper bracket and abutment clips
Disassemble caliper bracket hardware: remove old abutment clips, clean rust and brake dust from clip seat grooves with a wire brush, and insert new stainless steel abutment clips.
Rust scale under abutment clips will pinch new pads in place and cause binding or premature inner pad wear.

Caliper slide pins and boots
Pull out the upper and lower caliper slide pins, wipe away old degraded grease, inspect rubber dust boots for tears, coat pins with silicone brake grease, and reinstall into bores ensuring the rubber boots snap into their locking grooves.
Do not use petroleum-based grease on slide pins as it will swell and destroy the rubber dust boots.
Note that one slide pin often features a rubber sleeve on the tip (dampener bushing). Ensure it goes back into its original bore.

Caliper bracket mounting bolts
Mount the cleaned caliper bracket back onto the steering knuckle. Install the two 19mm bracket bolts and torque to 101 lbf-ft (137 N·m).

New brake pads and V-spring clips
Apply a thin film of high-temp brake grease to the contact tabs of the new brake pads and the pad-to-shim contact surfaces (never on friction material). Install the inner and outer pads into the bracket clips, then install the V-springs into the outer edge pinholes of the pad backings.
Keep friction material completely free of grease, oil, and cleaner.
Hold the pads in against spring tension while fitting the caliper body over them.

Front caliper dual pistons
Use the dual-piston caliper compression tool (or C-clamp across an old pad) to retract both caliper pistons fully into the caliper housing. Monitor the master cylinder reservoir under the hood to ensure fluid does not overflow.
Compress both pistons simultaneously or keep one blocked; pushing one piston in can push the other out.

Caliper slide pin flange bolts
Lower the caliper body over the new pads and bracket. Thread in the two 14mm slide pin flange bolts and torque to 37 lbf-ft (50 N·m).

Front wheels and lug nuts
Reinstall front wheels, thread lug nuts finger tight, lower vehicle to the ground, and torque all lug nuts to 80 lbf-ft (108 N·m) in a star pattern.

Brake hydraulic system and pedal
Before starting or driving the vehicle, pump the brake pedal 4–5 times until firm resistance is established, seat the master cylinder cap, verify brake fluid level between MIN and MAX lines, and perform a proper pad bed-in test drive.
CRITICAL: If you do not pump the brake pedal before driving, the vehicle will have NO braking ability on first pedal application.
Perform several moderate stops from 40 mph down to 10 mph without coming to a complete stop to transfer an even transfer layer of friction material to the new rotor.
Gotchas
- Rotor retaining screws strip effortlessly with regular screwdrivers. Always use a manual impact screwdriver with a #3 Phillips/JIS bit or drill them out if already rounded off.
- Dual-piston front calipers require compressing both pistons at the exact same time; forcing one in with single pliers will pop the adjacent piston out of its bore.
- The caliper bracket bolts (19mm) require high torque (101 lb-ft) and are often confused with rear caliper bracket torque (79-80 lb-ft). Always apply the higher spec to front knuckle bolts.
- Pad spreader V-springs (anti-drag return springs) must be reinstalled into the tiny holes at the outer top corners of the pad backing plates. Forgetting them causes pad drag and accelerated wear.
Common mistakes
- Forgetting to pump the brake pedal after replacing pads before shifting into gear, causing zero initial brake response and vehicle collision risk.
- Failing to clean rust scale off the hub face prior to new rotor installation, causing rotor runout, brake vibration, and steering judder within 1,000 miles.
- Letting the heavy dual-piston caliper hang by its flexible rubber brake hose, straining internal reinforcement and causing hose failure or internal kinking.
- Using petroleum-based wheel bearing grease on caliper slide pins, which causes rubber boot swelling, moisture intrusion, and seized guide pins.
- Installing brake pads backwards (backing plate facing rotor surface) or omitting pad shims, resulting in instant metal-on-metal grinding and rotor destruction.
It's a Good Idea To... Greasy tips and useful while-you're-in-there advice.
Those rotor retaining screws are JIS Phillips heads, not standard Phillips. A manual impact screwdriver with a #3 bit and a solid mallet strike will pop them loose without stripping. If they're already rounded, drill them out. Also: slide pins live in silicone brake grease only—petroleum grease swells the rubber boots and seizes them solid.
You Already Have a Screw Loose. Your Car Shouldn't. Final checks before you call it done.
This is a solid Saturday job. New pads and rotors, clean hardware, the right torque values, and you're done. One last thing: after you drive it, do a few moderate stops from 40 down to 10 mph to bed in the pads evenly. No panic stops yet.
