Front wheel bearing on a 2015 Tacoma 4WD or PreRunner? Yeah, this one's intermediate but totally doable in your driveway. Plan 1–2 hours. The real enemy here is rust; everything else is just bolt-turning.
How Rough Is This Going to Be? Know what you're getting into.
You're swapping the entire hub-and-bearing assembly (not rebuilding it—that needs a 20-ton press). You'll unbolt the caliper, tap the CV axle loose, remove four bolts from behind the knuckle, and bolt in a new pre-assembled hub. The gotcha: those four 17mm hub bolts live behind the knuckle casting in a tight spot. A standard socket probably won't fit; grab a 17mm offset box wrench or crowfoot adapter. Also, your knuckle bore might be welded shut with rust. Penetrating oil and patience help. Corrosion buildup will throw your new hub out of alignment and wreck your rotor runout, so clean it out properly before reinstalling.
Save Another Trip to the Parts Store Clips, seals, fluids, and the little stuff people forget.
A new cotter pin for the axle nut. A fresh O-ring seal (usually comes with quality hub kits, but check). Anti-seize compound for the knuckle bore and CV splines—worth the extra minute to prevent future galvanic corrosion hell. Medium threadlocker for the four hub bolts. And don't forget to bleed the brake line bracket back on after you're done; it's easy to skip and looks sloppy.
Here's Where It Gets Greasy The procedure, pain points, and common ways this job fights back.
1) Torquing the 35mm axle nut with an impact gun instead of a calibrated wrench. You'll overload the bearing and it'll fail in 5,000 miles. Use 173 ft-lbs, full stop. 2) Skipping the knuckle bore cleanup. Rust and crud = hub misalignment = brake pulsation. 3) Mangling the O-ring seal. Don't twist it or pinch it during install. 4) Hammering the bare CV shaft threads with a steel hammer. Use a brass drift or protect the threads first, or you'll mushroom the spindle tip and can't get the nut back on.

Front Wheel / Lug Nuts
Loosen wheel lug nuts slightly while vehicle is on ground, safely lift the front of the vehicle, support on jack stands, and remove the wheel.
Never work under a vehicle supported solely by a hydraulic jack.
Chock rear wheels and set parking brake.

Hub Dust Cap & Cotter Pin
Pry off the grease dust cap from the center of the hub using a flat blade screwdriver or chisel, then remove the cotter pin and axle lock nut keeper.
Work around the dust cap evenly to avoid puncturing or deforming it excessively.

Front Axle Spindle Nut
Loosen and remove the 35mm axle spindle nut. If necessary, have an assistant press the brake pedal or insert a pry bar between wheel studs to prevent the hub from turning.
Avoid aggressive impact gun use when reassembling bearings; loosening with impact is acceptable.
Thread a couple of lug nuts onto studs to protect threads if counter-holding with a pry bar.

Front Brake Caliper & Hose Bracket
Unbolt the 12mm brake line flex hose bracket from the knuckle, then remove the two 17mm brake caliper mounting bolts. Lift caliper off the rotor and secure it to the frame or upper control arm with a hanger hook.
Do not let the heavy caliper hang by the rubber brake hose.

Brake Rotor
Slide the brake rotor off the wheel studs. If stuck to the hub face, thread two M8-1.25 bolts into the threaded rotor removal holes and tighten evenly until rotor pops loose.
Clean rust scale off the hub flange face if reusing rotor.

CV Axle Spline
Gently tap the end of the CV axle shaft inward using a brass drift punch or deadblow hammer to release the axle splines from the wheel hub.
Never strike bare CV axle threads with a steel hammer, which will distort threads.
Thread the axle nut on flush with the shaft end before tapping if a brass drift is unavailable.

Hub Assembly Bolts (4x)
From behind the knuckle, loosen and remove the four 17mm bolts securing the hub assembly and brake dust shield to the steering knuckle.
Turn the steering wheel to gain better wrench clearance for hard-to-reach bolts.

Wheel Bearing Hub & Knuckle Bore
Remove the old wheel hub and bearing assembly and the brake dust shield from the steering knuckle. Clean all corrosion, debris, and old seal residue from the knuckle bore.
Ensure the knuckle mounting face is flat and free of rust buildup to prevent hub misalignment and brake pulsation.
If the hub is seized in the knuckle bore, use a hub puller or rethread the four bolts partially and tap them evenly from behind.

O-Ring Seal & Knuckle Bore
Install the new O-ring seal into the groove on the hub assembly or knuckle bore. Apply a light coat of anti-seize or clean grease to the knuckle bore and CV shaft splines.
Take care not to pinch, twist, or tear the O-ring during installation.

Hub Assembly Bolts
Position the brake dust shield and guide the new hub assembly over the CV axle splines into the steering knuckle. Install the four 17mm mounting bolts with medium threadlocker and torque to 59 ft-lbs in a criss-cross pattern.
Ensure the dust shield cutouts align correctly for the brake caliper.

Axle Spindle Nut & Cotter Pin
Install the axle washer and 35mm axle spindle nut. Torque the nut to 173 ft-lbs using a calibrated torque wrench. Install the nut lock cap and insert a new cotter pin, bending prongs securely.
Do not use an impact wrench for final tightening; improper torque will shorten bearing service life.
If the cotter pin holes do not line up at 173 ft-lbs, advance the nut slightly until the pin slides through.

Hub Grease Dust Cap
Tap the center grease dust cap back into place on the hub flange.

Brake Caliper & Rotor
Reinstall the brake rotor, reposition the brake caliper over the rotor, and torque the two 17mm caliper mounting bolts to 90 ft-lbs. Reattach the brake hose bracket and tighten the 12mm bolt to 9 ft-lbs.

Wheel Lug Nuts
Reinstall wheel, snug lug nuts, lower vehicle to the ground, and torque lug nuts in a criss-cross star pattern to 83 ft-lbs.
Pump brake pedal several times before driving and perform a road test to verify silent operation.
Gotchas
- Attempting to replace individual bearing components without a 20-ton hydraulic press and specialized bearing puller adapters is nearly impossible for DIYers; purchasing a complete pre-pressed hub assembly is strongly recommended.
- The 4 hub-to-knuckle bolts (17mm) have tight clearance behind the knuckle casting. A standard deep socket may not fit; a flat or offset 17mm box wrench or 17mm crowfoot adapter is often required.
- Road grime and galvanic corrosion can cause the hub body to seize firmly inside the knuckle bore. Applying penetrating oil and tapping the bolt heads evenly from behind is often required to break the hub free.
Common mistakes
- Using an impact wrench to tighten the 35mm axle nut instead of a calibrated torque wrench, leading to bearing overload or premature failure.
- Failing to clean the corrosion out of the knuckle bore before installing the new hub, causing the new hub to sit misaligned and creating brake rotor runout.
- Forgetting or damaging the large hub-to-knuckle O-ring seal during assembly, allowing water and grit to enter behind the bearing and destroy the seal.
- Striking the bare CV axle threads with a steel hammer, mushrooming the spindle tip so the axle nut cannot be threaded back on.

Before tapping the CV axle out of the hub, thread the 35mm axle nut back on flush with the shaft threads. Then tap the nut instead of bare threads. Protects the threads from mushrooming and makes reassembly way less frustrating. Also, clean that knuckle bore aggressively—wire brush, then wipe it dry. A sloppy bore = crooked hub = pulsing brakes and early bearing death.
You Already Have a Screw Loose. Your Car Shouldn't. Final checks before you call it done.
Torque the four hub bolts to 59 ft-lbs in a criss-cross, the axle nut to 173 ft-lbs with a fresh cotter pin, the caliper bolts to 90 ft-lbs, and the wheel lugs to 83 ft-lbs star-pattern on the ground. Pump the brakes, take it for a spin, and listen for noise. If it's quiet, you nailed it. If it groans or clicks, something didn't seat right—likely hub misalignment or a tweaked O-ring.
