How Rough Is This Going to Be? Know what you're getting into.
You're pulling the calipers, swapping pads and rotors, and putting everything back. The fixed 4-piston caliper means you'll need to press all four pistons back evenly—if you lean on one side, the opposite piston pushes out. Rusted rotors can stick to the hub, which is where the M8 extraction bolts earn their keep. And the brake line bracket on the knuckle? That's not optional. Remove it or you'll bend the rigid line when you pivot the caliper off. Torque specs matter here: 91 ft-lbs on the caliper bolts, 21 ft-lbs on the line bracket, 83 ft-lbs on the wheel lugs.

Front Wheel Lug Nuts
Chock the rear wheels securely on flat, level ground. Crack loose the front wheel lug nuts on both sides using a 21mm socket while the vehicle is still weighted on the ground.
Do not fully remove lug nuts before raising vehicle.
Only break lug nut tension by 1/2 turn.

Front Suspension / Wheels
Raise the front of the vehicle using a hydraulic floor jack positioned under the front crossmember jack point. Lower the vehicle onto heavy-duty jack stands placed under the frame rails. Remove lug nuts and take off both front wheels.
Never work under or around a vehicle supported solely by a hydraulic jack.

Brake Master Cylinder Reservoir
Under the hood, clean the exterior of the brake master cylinder reservoir cap and remove or loosen the cap. Check the fluid level to ensure fluid will not overflow when the caliper pistons are pushed back.
Brake fluid damages painted surfaces immediately. Siphon off excess fluid if level is near MAX before compressing pistons.

Pad Retaining Hardware and Anti-Rattle Spring
Locate the caliper pad retention clip (hairpin wire) linking the two pad guide pins. Use needle-nose pliers to remove the hairpin clip from the holes in the guide pins. Carefully disengage and remove the anti-rattle / pad return spring.
The anti-rattle spring is under tension and can snap loose.
Note the exact orientation and position of the anti-rattle spring wings against the pads for reassembly.

Caliper Pad Guide Pins
Slide out both upper and lower caliper guide pins from the caliper body. If seized with brake dust or rust, tap them out from the outboard side using a pin punch and small hammer.
Inspect pins for grooves or severe pitting; replace them if worn.

Brake Pads and Caliper Pistons
Using a multi-piston caliper tool or a large pry bar against the backing plate of the old brake pads, push the 4 caliper pistons fully back into the caliper housing bores. Once pistons are fully retracted, pull the old inner and outer brake pads along with their shims out through the top/rear opening of the caliper.
Fixed 4-piston calipers have hydraulic cross-passages; pushing one piston can force the opposing piston out if not pressed together or retained.
Leaving the old pads in place while pressing helps push all 4 pistons back evenly.

Brake Line Bracket
Remove the 12mm bolt securing the flexible brake line mounting bracket to the steering knuckle spindle. This provides vital slack to move the caliper without stressing the rigid hard line or rubber hose.
Never attempt to unbolt the caliper without freeing this line bracket; the short rigid metal pipe section attached to the caliper will bend or fracture.

Brake Caliper Assembly
Remove the two 17mm caliper mounting bolts securing the caliper to the steering knuckle. Carefully pull the caliper assembly off the rotor and suspend it from the upper control arm or suspension spring using a caliper hanger hook.
Never allow the heavy caliper to hang by the hydraulic brake hose or hard line.

Front Brake Rotor
Slide the brake rotor off the wheel hub. If the rotor is seized to the hub face by rust, thread two M8x1.25 bolts into the dedicated threaded extraction holes on the rotor hat. Turn each bolt incrementally and alternately clockwise until the rotor breaks free.
Do not strike the rotor face aggressively with a steel sledgehammer if you plan to measure or turn it, and avoid hitting wheel studs.
Applying penetrating oil around the center hub bore 10 minutes prior eases separation.

Wheel Hub Mounting Surface
Thoroughly clean all corrosion, scale, and rust from the wheel hub face using a wire brush or hub abrasive disc. Wipe clean and apply a thin film of anti-seize compound around the hub flange, avoiding the wheel studs.
Rust scale left on the hub surface causes lateral runout, resulting in brake pedal pulsation and steering wheel vibration under braking.

New Brake Rotor
Clean the new brake rotor completely with brake cleaner on both friction surfaces and the mounting hat to remove all manufacturer shipping oils. Slide the new rotor squarely over the wheel studs onto the hub.
Failing to clean protective oil from new rotors will contaminate new brake pads and severely degrade stopping performance.
Thread one or two lug nuts backwards against the rotor face to hold the rotor flat against the hub during caliper installation.

Brake Caliper Mounting Bolts
Position the caliper assembly back over the new rotor onto the steering knuckle mounts. Install the two 17mm caliper mounting bolts and torque both bolts to 91 ft-lbs (123 N·m).
Ensure caliper bolts are fully torqued to 91 ft-lbs; under-torqued caliper bolts can back out and cause catastrophic brake failure.

Brake Line Bracket Bolt
Reinstall the 12mm brake line bracket bolt onto the spindle/knuckle and torque to 21 ft-lbs (29 N·m). Ensure the brake line is correctly aligned without twists or binding.

New Brake Pads and Shims
Apply a light coating of high-temperature brake grease between the back of the brake pads and the anti-squeal shims, and to the contact edges where pads slide in the caliper. Do NOT get grease on pad friction material. Slide the new inner and outer brake pads into the caliper slots.
Never touch friction material with greased gloves.
Ensure the pad wear indicator is positioned in the correct factory orientation (typically trailing edge/inboard pad).

Guide Pins and Anti-Rattle Clip
Clean and lightly lubricate the pad guide pins with synthetic brake grease. Insert the bottom guide pin through the caliper and pad ears. Position the anti-rattle spring under the lower pin and over the pads, then slide the upper pin through the upper caliper hole, upper spring tab, and upper pad ears. Insert the retaining hairpin clip through the small holes in both pins to lock them in place.
Ensure the hairpin clip passes fully through both guide pins. If the clip is missing or improperly installed, the pins can back out, releasing the pads.

Front Wheels / Lug Nuts
Reinstall front wheels and hand-tighten lug nuts in a crisscross star pattern. Lower the vehicle until tires touch the ground. Final torque all lug nuts to 83 ft-lbs (113 N·m) in a star pattern using a calibrated torque wrench.
Always torque lug nuts with a torque wrench to prevent warped rotors or loose wheels.

Brake Pedal / Hydraulic System
Before starting the engine or moving the vehicle, pump the brake pedal 5 to 7 times until a firm, solid pedal feel is restored. Check fluid level in the master cylinder reservoir and secure the reservoir cap.
CRITICAL: If you do not pump the brake pedal before driving, the first application of the brake pedal will go completely to the floor with ZERO stopping ability.

Brake System Bed-In
Perform a test drive and standard pad bed-in procedure (e.g., 4–5 moderate stops from 45 mph down to 15 mph without coming to a complete stop, followed by a cool-down period) to properly transfer friction material to the new rotor surface.
Avoid severe panic stops or holding the brakes clamped at a dead stop during the initial bedding heat cycle.
Gotchas
- The rigid hard line jumper to the caliper will bend or snap if you do not remove the 12mm brake line bracket bolt on the spindle before moving the caliper.
- Rotors frequently rust-weld to the hub flange. Hammering the rotor face can damage wheel bearings or bend the backing plate; use two M8x1.25 bolts threaded into the extraction holes to press the rotor off safely.
- Because the 4-piston caliper is a fixed design with connected hydraulic channels, pressing one piston in without securing or spreading the others will push the opposing piston outward.
Common mistakes
- Failing to pump the brake pedal before shifting into gear, causing total loss of braking on the initial pedal stroke.
- Leaving rust and debris on the hub mating face prior to installing new rotors, resulting in excessive lateral runout and severe brake pedal pulsation within a few hundred miles.
- Forgetting to reinstall or improperly seating the pin retaining clip (hairpin wire), allowing the guide pins to vibrate out while driving.
- Failing to wash off manufacturer shipping cosmoline/oil coating on new rotors before installation, contaminating new brake pads.

Use the old brake pads as a brace while you press the pistons back. Jam them in the bore and push down—it keeps all four pistons from popping out of opposite sides.
