2014–2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 - 5.3L V8 / L83
Oil change on a 2015 Silverado 1500 5.3L L83. Straightforward job—20 to 40 minutes if the drain plug isn't welded shut and you have a big enough drain pan. The catch: this truck holds 8.0 quarts, not 6. That matters.
How Rough Is This Going to Be? Know what you're getting into.
Park on level ground, warm the engine for a minute or two, then drain 8 quarts into a minimum 10-quart pan. Swap the drain plug (torque it to 18 lb-ft—don't muscle it), pull the old spin-on filter, wipe the mounting surface clean, spin on a new PF63-style filter with a thin coat of fresh oil on the gasket, then pour in exactly 8.0 quarts of 0W-20 dexos1 synthetic. Check for leaks, verify oil pressure comes up, verify the level on the dipstick after a few minutes' drain-back time, then reset the oil life monitor on the dash. No jack stands needed—you can reach everything at stock height.
Save Another Trip to the Parts Store Clips, seals, fluids, and the little stuff people forget.
A drain pan big enough. Your standard 5-quart DIY pan will overflow. Also: pull the dipstick out an inch before you start draining so the crankcase vents and oil flows faster. And don't forget to check that the old filter's rubber gasket came off with it—if it sticks to the engine block, your new filter will double-gasket and you'll blow out all the oil the instant you fire it up.

Underfill because you're used to an older 5.3L Vortec that took 6 quarts—this one takes 8.0, period. Overtighten the drain plug and strip the aluminum pan. Forget that the old filter gasket didn't come off and double-gasket the new one. Use the wrong oil spec. Forget to reset the oil life monitor. Standard stuff, but the underfill and double-gasket are the killers here.

Vehicle positioning
Park vehicle on level ground, engage the parking brake, chock rear wheels, and warm engine to light operating temperature (1-2 minutes if completely cold). Turn ignition OFF.
Hot engine components and oil can cause severe burns; allow exhaust components to cool slightly before working near them.
Stock ride height allows most technicians to reach the drain plug and filter without lifting the vehicle.

Oil filler cap and dipstick
Open hood, remove the engine oil filler cap, and pull the dipstick out about 1 inch to allow crankcase air venting for rapid, smooth oil drainage.

Oil pan drain plug
Position a large drain pan (minimum 10-quart capacity) directly beneath the oil pan drain plug at the bottom rear of the oil pan.
Expect 8 full quarts to discharge with significant initial velocity toward the rear of the vehicle.
Position the drain pan slightly rearward of the plug to catch the initial oil arc.

Oil pan drain plug
Loosen and remove the 15mm drain plug by turning counterclockwise. Allow the used engine oil to drain completely until it slows to an intermittent drip (approx. 5-10 minutes).

Drain plug seal
Inspect the drain plug threads and integrated rubber O-ring seal. Clean the plug and pan sealing surface with a clean shop towel. Replace the seal/plug if deteriorated.

Oil pan drain plug
Reinstall the oil drain plug by hand to prevent cross-threading. Tighten and torque to 18 lb-ft (25 N·m) using a calibrated torque wrench and 15mm socket.
Do not over-torque the drain plug; the aluminum pan threads are easily damaged.

Engine oil filter
Reposition the drain pan underneath the oil filter on the driver side lower engine block. Loosen the filter using an oil filter wrench or by hand.
Oil will spill from around the perimeter of the filter as the seal breaks; keep the drain pan positioned underneath.
Cracking the filter loose half a turn allows residual oil to drain out cleanly before fully spinning it off.

Engine oil filter mounting base
Unscrew and remove the old oil filter completely. Inspect the old filter to ensure the circular rubber gasket came off with it. Wipe the engine mounting surface clean.
CRITICAL: Always verify that the old rubber O-ring gasket did not stick to the aluminum engine block. 'Double-gasketing' causes catastrophic oil loss and immediate engine destruction.

New oil filter gasket
Apply a thin film of clean engine oil to the rubber O-ring gasket of the new PF63-style filter.
Pre-filling the filter partly with clean oil is optional on vertical/semi-vertical spin-ons to speed oil pressure buildup on initial start.

New oil filter
Thread the new oil filter onto the engine mounting stud by hand until the gasket contacts the mounting base. Then tighten an additional 3/4 to 1 full turn by hand.
Do not use a wrench to overtighten the filter, which can distort the canister or crush the gasket.

Engine oil filler port
Place a clean funnel in the oil fill port on the passenger-side valve cover. Pour in 8.0 US quarts (7.6 L) of SAE 0W-20 dexos1 full synthetic engine oil.
Ensure exact volume; do not underfill with 6 quarts or overfill past 8 quarts.

Oil filler cap and dipstick
Reinstall the oil filler cap securely and push the dipstick fully into its tube.

Engine and instrument cluster
Start the engine and let it idle for 1-2 minutes. Verify the oil pressure gauge rises into the normal operating range (approx. 30-45+ psi). Check under the truck for leaks at the drain plug and oil filter.
If the low oil pressure warning light remains on for more than 5 seconds after starting, shut off engine immediately and investigate.

Engine oil dipstick
Shut off the engine and wait 3 to 5 minutes on level ground to allow oil to drain back into the sump. Pull the dipstick, wipe it clean, reinsert fully, and pull again to verify the oil level is within the cross-hatched operating zone at the top hash mark.

Driver Information Center (DIC)
Reset the GM Engine Oil Life System: Turn ignition ON with engine OFF. Use the right-side steering wheel 5-way control pad to navigate to 'Info' -> 'Oil Life'. Press and hold the '✓' (Checkmark/Set) button until the display resets to 100%. (Alternative method: Turn ignition ON with engine OFF and fully depress the accelerator pedal slowly three times within 5 seconds).
Turn ignition completely OFF after reset to store the new value.
Gotchas
- The Generation V EcoTec3 5.3L L83 requires 8.0 US quarts of oil. Technicians familiar with older Generation III/IV 5.3L Vortec engines (which held 6.0 quarts) frequently underfill these engines by 2 full quarts, causing severe oil starvation and valvetrain damage.
- Some early 2014-2015 owner manuals originally listed 8.5 quarts. GM issued Technical Service Bulletin PIP5231A establishing that 8.0 quarts (7.6L) is the exact fill with filter. Overfilling causes crankshaft frothing and aeration.
- The factory oil filter specification is the ACDelco PF63 / PF63E (or aftermarket equivalent with an M22x1.5 thread and high bypass pressure rated at ~22 psi). Do not install older Gen IV filters (such as PF48 or PF46), which feature lower bypass pressure calibrations (~15 psi) and may bypass dirty oil under normal EcoTec3 variable-displacement oil pump pressures.
- The oil filter O-ring commonly sticks to the engine block mounting pad upon removal. If not removed, the new filter will double-gasket, spraying pressurized oil and emptying the crankcase within seconds of engine startup.
- Standard 5-quart or 6-quart DIY drain pans are inadequate. With 8 quarts in the pan, a small container will overflow and create a major spill.
Common mistakes
- Underfilling the engine by adding only 5 or 6 quarts due to familiarity with older Gen III/IV Vortec 5.3L engines.
- Overtightening the 15mm oil pan drain plug past 18 lb-ft (25 N·m), which strips out the aluminum oil pan threads.
- Failing to check that the old filter rubber gasket came off with the old filter, resulting in double-gasketing.
- Using incorrect oil viscosity (such as 5W-30 or 10W-30 conventional) instead of full synthetic 0W-20 meeting GM dexos1, which can impede operation of the Active Fuel Management (AFM) valve lifters and variable valve timing (VVT) actuators.
- Neglecting to reset the Oil Life Monitor (OLM) in the Driver Information Center after the service.

Pre-fill the new filter with a little of your fresh oil before threading it on. On a vertical spin-on like this, it can shave a few seconds off the oil pressure build-up on cold start. Also: 0W-20 only. Not 5W-30, not 10W-30. The EcoTec3's variable valve timing and Active Fuel Management lifters need the thinner stuff to work right.
You Already Have a Screw Loose. Your Car Shouldn't. Final checks before you call it done.
Driveway job, no drama. Respect the 8-quart capacity, use the right oil, torque that drain plug to spec, and you're done. If oil pressure doesn't climb within a few seconds of start, shut it down immediately—you didn't pull the old filter gasket off.
