Front Wheel Bearing / Hub Assembly Replacement

2012–2017 Toyota Camry - 2.5L I4 / 2AR-FE

This is a press job, full stop. You'll need a 12-ton or 20-ton hydraulic shop press with the right bearing cups, or a dedicated FWD hub press kit. If you don't have access to either, stop here and swap the complete loaded steering knuckle instead—it'll save you money and grief. The 2012–2017 Camry's front bearing is a cartridge type pressed into the knuckle, and the hub presses into the bearing. This isn't a bolt-on hub assembly.

How Rough Is This Going to Be? Know what you're getting into.

Expect 90 to 180 minutes if you've done suspension work before and the rust gods are kind. Longer if fasteners are seized. You're pulling the entire front corner apart: brake caliper, rotor, wheel hub, ABS sensor, tie rod, ball joint, and strut bolts. Then the real work—pressing the old bearing out, pressing the new one in with the magnetic ABS ring facing inboard, and reinstalling everything in reverse. Torque specs matter here: 217 ft-lbs on the axle nut, 155 ft-lbs on the strut bolts, 90 ft-lbs on the ball joint, and the axle nut has to be staked afterward. Get those wrong and you'll either destroy the bearing or send the wheel flying.

Save Another Trip to the Parts Store Clips, seals, fluids, and the little stuff people forget.

The brake backing plate goes on the knuckle before you press the hub into the bearing—you can't reach it afterward. Buy a new 30mm 12-point axle nut and new cotter pins; don't reuse the old stake nut. Un-stake the old nut carefully with a punch before breaking it loose, or you'll mangle the CV axle threads. The ABS sensor is plastic and hates being pried; if it's stuck, soak it in penetrating oil and wiggle, don't yank. New snap ring—many bearing kits include one, but check.

Here's Where It Gets Greasy The procedure, pain points, and common ways this job fights back.

Installing the bearing backwards—the magnetic ABS encoder ring (dark seal) must face inboard toward the speed sensor, not outboard. Backwards = instant ABS/VSC/Traction Control fault codes and a very angry dashboard. Forgetting the snap ring entirely, so the bearing rattles loose in the knuckle. Reusing the old staked axle nut instead of torquing a new one to 217 ft-lbs and re-staking it. Damaging the plastic ABS sensor by prying on it instead of treating it like the fragile thing it is. Assuming you can bolt a hub on instead of pressing it—this Camry will not cooperate with that assumption.

Procedure

  1. 1
    Front CV Axle Nut

    Loosen axle nut staking and break nut loose while vehicle is on the ground (or remove center cap / wheel).

    Do not use an impact wrench to drive the axle nut off if the crimp/stake has not been completely unbent, as this will strip or damage the CV axle shaft threads.

    If aluminum wheels lack an accessible center cap, remove the wheel, pop the center cap out from the inside, reinstall the wheel, lower the car, and crack the nut loose.

    Front Wheel & Suspension

    Lift vehicle, support on jack stands, and remove front wheel.

    Never work under a vehicle supported only by a hydraulic floor jack.

    Front Brake Assembly

    Remove brake caliper, brake caliper mounting bracket, and brake rotor. Hang caliper assembly from strut spring.

    Never let the brake caliper hang by its flexible rubber brake hose.

    Removing the two 17mm caliper bracket mounting bolts allows removing the entire caliper and bracket together as an assembly.

    ABS Wheel Speed Sensor

    Disconnect ABS wheel speed sensor from steering knuckle and unclip wiring harness brackets.

    The ABS sensor is plastic and fragile. Do not pry aggressively or pull on the wiring harness. If seized, apply penetrating fluid and gently wiggle the sensor body.

    Unbolt the 10mm bolt and set the sensor body safely out of harm's way before suspension disassembly.

    Steering Knuckle & Linkages

    Disconnect outer tie rod end and lower ball joint from the steering knuckle.

    Do not damage the rubber ball joint or tie rod dust boots with a pickle fork if reusing the components.

    Remove cotter pins, loosen castle nuts, and strike the knuckle casting boss sharply with a hammer to shock the tapered stud free.

    Steering Knuckle Assembly

    Push CV axle shaft inboard out of the wheel hub splines, remove lower strut-to-knuckle bolts, and remove steering knuckle from vehicle.

    Support the CV axle shaft so it does not overextend or pull out of the inner CV joint / transaxle.

    Use a brass drift or punch centered on the axle shaft dimple to tap the axle inward if splines are snug.

    Wheel Hub & Dust Shield

    Remove brake backing plate (dust shield) and press the wheel hub out of the bearing.

    Ensure the steering knuckle is fully supported flat around the bearing housing bore when pressing out the hub.

    When the hub is pressed out, the outer inner race of the bearing will remain stuck to the hub spindle shaft.

    Snap Ring (Circlip)

    Remove internal bearing retaining snap ring (circlip) from the steering knuckle bore.

    Wear eye protection; snap rings under tension can pop off violently.

    Apply penetrating oil and tap the circlip with a punch to break corrosion free from the groove before using snap ring pliers.

    Wheel Bearing & Knuckle Bore

    Press old wheel bearing out of steering knuckle and clean knuckle bore.

    Press the bearing out from the inboard side toward the outboard side (away from the internal snap ring lip).

    Clean the knuckle bore thoroughly with brake cleaner and a wire brush to remove rust, burrs, or debris.

    New Front Wheel Bearing

    Press new wheel bearing into the steering knuckle with magnetic ABS encoder facing INBOARD.

    CRITICAL: The magnetic ABS encoder ring (dark/brown side) MUST face INWARD toward the speed sensor. Installing backward will disable ABS, VSC, and Traction Control. Press ONLY on the OUTER race of the bearing when pressing into the knuckle bore. Pressing on the inner race will destroy the new bearing.

    Use a magnetic test card or a steel paperclip to confirm which side is magnetic if not clearly marked.

    Snap Ring (Circlip)

    Install new snap ring into the knuckle groove and verify it is 100% seated.

    If the snap ring is not completely seated in its groove, the bearing and hub can walk out during driving, causing catastrophic wheel separation.

    Wheel Hub & Dust Shield

    Reinstall brake dust shield, then press the wheel hub into the new bearing.

    CRITICAL: When pressing the hub into the bearing, the press tool MUST firmly support the INNER race of the bearing from behind. Failure to support the inner race will separate and ruin the bearing. Install the brake dust shield BEFORE pressing the hub into the bearing; the shield cannot be installed once the hub is in place.

    Suspension & Steering Knuckle

    Reinstall steering knuckle onto the vehicle, engaging CV axle splines, lower ball joint, and strut assembly.

    Apply a thin coat of anti-seize to the CV axle splines before sliding through the hub.

    Suspension Hardware

    Torque strut-to-knuckle bolts (155 ft-lbs), lower ball joint nut (90 ft-lbs), and tie rod nut (36 ft-lbs). Install new cotter pins.

    Never back off castle nuts to align cotter pin holes; always tighten further to reach the next alignment slot.

    ABS Wheel Speed Sensor

    Reinstall ABS wheel speed sensor and torque bolt to 71 in-lbs (6 ft-lbs). Secure wiring harness brackets.

    Do not over-tighten the 10mm sensor bolt into the knuckle casting.

    Brake System

    Reinstall brake rotor, caliper bracket (torque bolts to 79 ft-lbs), and caliper slide pins (25 ft-lbs).

    Front CV Axle Nut

    Thread new CV axle nut, torque to 217 ft-lbs (294 N·m), and stake the collar firmly into the axle shaft keyway.

    Proper torque is vital to establish proper bearing preload. A loose or over-torqued axle nut will lead to premature bearing destruction. Ensure the nut collar is properly staked with a dull punch into the axle groove to prevent it from backing out.

    Final torque can be applied with the vehicle on the ground or by having an assistant firmly press the brake pedal.

  18. 18
    Wheel / Lug Nuts

    Reinstall wheel, lower vehicle to ground, and torque lug nuts to 76 ft-lbs in a cross pattern.

Gotchas

  • The front wheel bearing has an integrated magnetic ABS encoder on one side (dark/brown seal). If pressed into the knuckle backwards, the ABS sensor cannot read wheel speed, immediately triggering ABS/VSC/Traction Control warning lights (trouble code C0200 or C0205).
  • When pressing the hub into the newly installed bearing, you MUST support the inner race from behind. Pressing the hub while supporting the knuckle or outer race will push the inner race out of the bearing, destroying it instantly.
  • The brake backing plate / dust shield must be installed and bolted to the knuckle BEFORE pressing the hub into the bearing. The hub flange blocks access to the dust shield mounting bolts once installed.
  • Do not attempt to remove the 30mm 12-point axle nut with an impact gun before completely un-staking the crimped collar from the axle slot. Doing so can shear the axle shaft threads.

Common mistakes

  • Forgetting to install the internal circlip (snap ring) before pressing the hub into the bearing.
  • Reusing the old staked axle nut or failing to restake the new nut into the axle shaft slot after torquing to 217 ft-lbs.
  • Damaging the ABS sensor during removal by prying forcefully on the plastic body instead of cleaning corrosion and gently rotating.
  • Assuming the front bearing is a bolt-in hub assembly (like the rear Camry hub or front hubs on many domestic/European vehicles) rather than a press-in cartridge bearing.
It's a Good Idea To... Greasy tips and useful while-you're-in-there advice.

Before pressing the new bearing in, clean the knuckle bore thoroughly with brake cleaner and a wire brush. Corrosion and grit in there will tilt the bearing during the press, and you'll be doing this twice. When you press the hub into the new bearing, the press tool absolutely must support the inner race from behind. Support the outer race or the knuckle itself and you've just ruined a $100+ bearing in one stroke. If the old bearing's inner race won't come off the hub spindle cleanly, a bearing splitter or angle grinder with a cutoff wheel beats hammering it for an hour.

You Already Have a Screw Loose. Your Car Shouldn't. Final checks before you call it done.

Bolt everything back together, torque everything to spec (and I mean everything), stake that axle nut, and spin the wheel by hand to confirm it spins freely. If you hear grinding or the wheel locks, you either installed the bearing backwards, pressed it in crooked, or forgot the snap ring. Do a test drive at low speed in a safe area and listen for grinding, humming, or play. ABS and traction control lights that were off should stay off. If they light up, the ABS ring is backward or the sensor fell out.
