The housing uses a rubber O-ring that sits in a specific recessed groove—miss that detail and you'll have oil everywhere on startup. New crush washer on the drain plug each time, 30 ft-lbs. Filter cap, 18 ft-lbs. Capacity is 4.6 quarts with the filter swap.

The old crush washer often stays glued to the oil pan after you pull the drain bolt. Don't stack a fresh washer on top of it or the plug will weep. Also: warm the engine and let the crankcase breathe by cracking the oil cap and dipstick before you drain. Level ground before you check the final oil level on the stick, because 0.4 quarts hangs in the new filter housing.

Overtightening the plastic filter housing will strip threads or crack the cap next time around. 18 foot-pounds, no more. Installing the large O-ring dry is asking for it to pinch or roll as you thread the housing; coat it with fresh oil first. And don't use a generic strap or 3-jaw wrench on this housing—you'll snap the flutes. Get the Toyota-specific 64mm 14-flute socket wrench with the slot cutouts.

Procedure

    Vehicle lifting points

    Warm the engine to normal operating temperature, park on flat ground, set the parking brake, chock rear wheels, and safely elevate the front end with a jack and jack stands or drive-on ramps.

    Never get under a vehicle supported solely by a floor jack.

    Warming the engine helps suspend particulate contaminants and allows the oil to drain quickly and completely.

    Oil filler neck and dipstick

    Pop the hood, remove the engine oil filler cap, and pull the dipstick out a few inches to improve crankcase venting during drainage.

    Placing the oil cap over the hood latch prevents you from closing the hood before refilling.

    Engine oil pan drain plug

    Position an oil drain pan directly beneath the oil pan drain plug at the bottom rear of the engine oil pan.

    Engine oil and exhaust pipes may be hot enough to cause severe burns.

    Anticipate the stream arc when loosening the drain bolt.

    Using a 14mm socket and ratchet, loosen and remove the oil drain plug. Allow the old engine oil to completely drain into the pan until it slows to a light drip.

    Inspect the removed drain plug to verify the old crush washer came off with it and is not stuck to the oil pan.

    Move the drain pan forward beneath the oil filter cartridge housing located on the front passenger-lower side of the engine.

    Optional housing pre-drain: Remove the small metal drain plug in the center of the oil filter housing using a 3/8-inch square ratchet drive, push the plastic drain tube included in the filter kit into the housing to snap the check valve open, and drain trapped oil into the pan. Remove and discard the tube.

    Oil flows quickly once the plastic tube snaps into place.

    Skipping pre-drain is common among DIYers; if loosening the entire cap directly, loosen slowly to minimize spills.

    Oil filter housing assembly

    Fit the 64.5mm 14-flute Toyota filter wrench socket over the oil filter housing assembly, engage the flutes and housing cutouts, and loosen the housing using a ratchet. Spin off by hand and lower the housing assembly into the pan.

    Do not use adjustable pliers or strap wrenches; they can shatter plastic housing bodies and break retention tabs.

    Filter housing and O-ring groove

    Remove and discard the old paper cartridge element. Using a pick or small flathead screwdriver, remove the large rubber O-ring from the outer groove of the filter housing.

    Do not scratch or gouge the O-ring sealing groove with metal picks.

    Wipe the inside and threads of the housing clean with a lint-free rag.

    Oil filter housing O-ring

    Coat the new large O-ring with fresh engine oil and slide it down into the designated recessed O-ring groove on the housing. (CRITICAL: Do not install it in the uppermost thread root/flange groove).

    Misplacing the large O-ring on the upper thread shoulder causes catastrophic oil leaks upon engine startup.

    Ensure the O-ring is fully seated and not twisted.

    Oil filter element and center drain plug

    Insert the new cartridge filter element (04152-YZZA1) firmly into the housing. If the center drain plug was removed in Step 6, replace its small O-ring (lubricated), reinstall the center plug, and torque to 9 ft-lbs (12.5 N·m).

    Do not overtighten the small center drain plug.

    Oil filter housing assembly

    Thread the oil filter housing assembly into the engine mount by hand until it seats against the engine block. Tighten using the 64.5mm filter wrench and torque wrench to 18 ft-lbs (25 N·m).

    Do not overtighten; over-torquing cracks the housing or binds the threads.

    The housing will reach a hard mechanical stop once fully seated.

    Oil pan drain plug and gasket

    Clean the oil pan drain hole flange, place a new OEM crush washer (90430-12031) onto the 14mm drain plug, thread it in by hand, and torque to 30 ft-lbs (40 N·m).

    Do not reuse the old crush washer or double-stack washers.

    Engine oil filler neck

    Insert a clean funnel into the valve cover oil filler neck and pour in 4.6 US quarts (4.4 liters) of fresh SAE 0W-20 full synthetic engine oil. Reinstall the oil filler cap securely.

    Pouring slowly prevents oil from backing up and spilling around the filler neck.

    Engine lubrication system

    Start the engine and allow it to idle for 1 to 2 minutes. While idling, look underneath the car to confirm zero oil seepage or leakage at the drain plug and oil filter housing.

    If the low oil pressure warning light remains illuminated for more than 5 seconds after startup, shut off the engine immediately.

    Engine oil dipstick

    Turn the engine off, lower the vehicle if raised, and allow the vehicle to rest on a level surface for 5 minutes. Pull the dipstick, wipe clean, reinsert fully, pull again, and confirm the oil level is at or near the top 'Full' dot.

    Do not overfill past the top mark on the dipstick.

    Instrument cluster maintenance indicator

    Reset the Maintenance Required Light: Turn ignition switch ON (RUN position). Switch odometer display to Trip A. Turn ignition switch OFF. Press and hold the Trip/Odometer reset button while switching the ignition back to ON (do not crank starter). Keep holding until the dashed countdown on the display clears and 000000 / 'COMPLETE' appears, then release.

    On push-button start models, press the START button twice with your foot OFF the brake to enter ON/RUN mode.

Gotchas

  • The cartridge oil filter housing has multiple exterior grooves; the large rubber O-ring must be installed into the second recessed groove specifically machined for it, NOT in the thread root/upper flange groove. Placing it on the top lip will pinch the seal and cause massive oil loss upon startup.
  • Using generic 3-jaw or strap oil filter wrenches can break the fragile plastic flutes and ears on the factory Toyota cartridge housing. Only use a dedicated 64mm/64.5mm 14-flute socket wrench designed with slot cutouts for Toyota housings.
  • The factory crush washer (90430-12031) frequently sticks to the painted oil pan surface when the drain bolt is removed. If you install a new washer over the old stuck one (double-gasketing), the plug will loosen and leak.

Common mistakes

  • Overtightening the plastic oil filter housing beyond the 18 ft-lb (25 N·m) specification, leading to stripped threads, cracked housings, or severe binding during the next oil change.
  • Installing the large O-ring dry, causing it to roll, pinch, or tear as the housing threads are tightened.
  • Failing to check oil level on level ground after running the engine, leading to slight underfilling since 0.4 qt of oil remains in the filter housing after dry installation.

If you crack open the cartridge housing's center drain plug (optional but smart), you'll evacuate old oil faster and cleaner. Push the plastic tube included in the filter kit into the housing—it pops a check valve and drains immediately. Just be ready for the gush. Wipe the inside of the housing clean with a lint-free rag before you seat the new element.

Torque the drain plug to 30 ft-lbs, the filter cap to 18 ft-lbs. Fill with 4.6 quarts of 0W-20 full synthetic, fire it up for a minute while you eyeball for leaks underneath, then let it sit on level ground for five minutes before you check the dipstick. Reset the Maintenance Required light on the instrument cluster when you're done. Done.
