Front wheel bearing and hub work on this Civic (2012–2015, whether you've got the 1.8L, the CNG version, the hybrid, or the 2.4L Si) is a press job, not a swap-a-cartridge job: the bearing lives inside the knuckle and the hub gets pressed through it. It's rated Intermediate for a reason. The thing that decides your afternoon is whether the rotor screws and the old bearing race come off clean or fight you. How Rough Is This Going to Be? Know what you're getting into.
Caliper and bracket come off first and get hung, not left dangling on the hose. Then the rotor's retaining screws, the tie rod end, and the knuckle itself comes out with the axle stub pulled from the hub splines. From there it's press work: hub out of the bearing, old bearing out of the knuckle bore, new bearing in with the magnetic encoder side facing inward, hub pressed back through it with the inner race properly supported. None of that happens on ramps — you need the wheel off and the knuckle free, so jack stands are mandatory. The 60 to 150 minute estimate assumes the press work goes smoothly and nothing is seized. Corroded rotor screws, a stuck inner race that won't let go of the hub shaft, or an ABS sensor bonded into its bore by rust are what turn this into the long end of that window, or past it.

The axle nut is a staked flange nut, and once it's been torqued down and staked it's not going back on a second time with a clean conscience. Grab a new one, plus a new cotter pin for the tie rod castle nut. The bearing's retaining circlip is worth having on hand rather than reusing a bent one. Have penetrating oil ready for the ABS sensor housing and the rotor screws before you start, not after you've already stripped something. And check which spindle nut socket you actually need — the non-Si and Si engines use different sizes, so don't show up with just one.
Here's Where It Gets Greasy The procedure, pain points, and common ways this job fights back.
Pressing the new bearing in with the magnetic encoder side facing outward is the expensive one: the ABS/VSA lights come on, you get a wheel speed fault code, and the bearing has to be destroyed to pull it back out and redo it correctly. Stripping the rotor's retaining screws with a hand screwdriver instead of an impact driver is the common one — plan on an impact driver from the start. Prying or forcing a corroded ABS sensor out of its knuckle bore instead of soaking it and working it gently snaps the plastic housing, turning a bearing job into a sensor-replacement job too. And pressing without supporting the correct race, covered separately, is the one that fails quietly, later.
Gotchas
- When the hub is pressed out of the knuckle, the outboard inner bearing race almost always remains tightly pressed onto the hub spindle shaft. A bearing splitter and hydraulic press, or careful cutting of a relief slot with a cutoff wheel and splitting with a cold chisel, is required to remove it without gouging the hub journal.
- Installing the new wheel bearing backwards (with the magnetic encoder facing outboard instead of inboard toward the ABS sensor tip) prevents the wheel speed sensor from reading wheel rotation, illuminating ABS and VSA warning lights and requiring complete disassembly and destruction of the new bearing to correct.
- The factory countersunk Phillips/JIS brake rotor screws frequently rust into the hub face. Attempting removal with a standard handheld screwdriver often strips the screw head; a manual impact driver or screw extractor is required.
- Road salt and galvanic corrosion bind the plastic sensor housing inside the cast iron knuckle bore. Forcing or prying on the sensor body easily snaps the plastic neck. Soaking with penetrating lubricant and gently twisting the sensor tab is necessary to avoid sensor replacement.
- Pressing on the inner race while inserting the bearing into the knuckle, or failing to support the inner race while pressing the hub into the bearing, transmits heavy axial shock through the internal balls and brinells/dents the raceway, causing premature bearing failure within hundreds of miles.

Whatever you do, support the correct race when you press. Press the new bearing into the knuckle on the outer race only, and press the hub into the bearing supporting the inner race only. Do it backwards and you brinell the raceway with shock load — the bearing might spin fine that day and be growling again in a few hundred miles.

Before you call it done, spin the hub by hand for smoothness and rock the wheel at 12 and 6 to check for play, then take it for a drive and listen for the drone that sent you into this job in the first place. Clear any ABS/VSA codes and confirm the light stays off once the sensor's seated correctly. Torque the lug nuts, lower it off the stands, and you're finished.
