Front Wheel Bearing / Hub Assembly Replacement

2013–2019 Ford Escape - 1.6L I4 EcoBoost / JQMA

Front wheel bearing on a 2014 Escape is a press-in cartridge job—not a five-minute swap. You're pressing the hub out of the old bearing, pressing the old bearing out of the knuckle, and pressing new parts back in. This is a 90–180 minute commitment minimum, and you'll need a hydraulic shop press or a serious on-vehicle bearing kit. If you don't have press access, stop here and call a shop.

How Rough Is This Going to Be? Know what you're getting into.

The steering knuckle houses a Generation 2 cartridge bearing with an integrated magnetic ABS encoder. The hub is pressed into the inner race. To replace either part, everything comes apart: brake caliper, rotor, ABS sensor, tie rod end, ball joint, strut pinch clamp, and CV axle. Once the knuckle is out, you press the hub out, remove the inner snap ring, press the old bearing out, clean the bore, press the new bearing in (magnetic face inward), install a new snap ring, press the hub back in, and reassemble. The two-stage axle nut torque—80 Nm plus 90 degrees—is not optional and must be done with hand tools and an angle gauge, never an impact wrench.

Save Another Trip to the Parts Store Clips, seals, fluids, and the little stuff people forget.

New OEM axle nut (32mm). Do not reuse the old one—it's torque-to-yield single-use only. New snap ring usually comes in the bearing kit, but verify before you start. Brake cleaner for the knuckle bore. A caliper hanger so the brake assembly doesn't hang from the flex hose. An angle gauge or degree meter for the final 90-degree stage of axle nut torque. If Ford's two-piece lug nuts are swollen (they often are), a 19.5mm half-size flip socket.

Here's Where It Gets Greasy The procedure, pain points, and common ways this job fights back.

Pressing the bearing out without removing the internal snap ring first—knuckle cracks or shatters. Using an impact wrench on the axle nut instead of a torque wrench and angle gauge—threads gall, bearing raceways get shocked, threads strip. Letting the CV axle hang by its splines after you unbolt the knuckle—the inner tripod can pull out of the transmission housing or the rubber boot tears. Pressing on the wrong race when installing the new bearing or pressing the hub in without supporting the inner race underneath—you'll indent or separate the bearing before the car moves an inch.

Procedure

  1. 1
    Front wheel & axle nut

    Loosen axle nut and wheel lug nuts slightly while the vehicle is on the ground (or use an impact wrench once lifted), raise the front of the vehicle, and secure safely on jack stands.

    Never work under a vehicle supported only by a hydraulic jack.

    If the factory two-piece lug nuts are swollen, use a 19.5mm socket to avoid rounding hex flats.

    Brake caliper & bracket

    Remove the front wheel, unbolt the brake caliper and caliper bracket as an assembly (or separate them), and hang the caliper securely with a caliper hanger from the strut spring.

    Do not let the heavy caliper hang by the rubber brake flex hose.

    Remove the brake rotor from the hub face. If rusted on, spray penetrating oil around the hub center and tap between wheel studs with a rubber mallet.

    ABS wheel speed sensor & bracket

    Disconnect the ABS wheel speed sensor from the steering knuckle and unbolt the brake hose bracket.

    Carefully twist and pull the ABS sensor straight out; do not pry harshly on the plastic body as it can fracture.

    Clean any accumulated metal shavings or road grit off the sensor tip before setting it aside.

    CV axle halfshaft & tie rod end

    Remove the 32mm CV axle nut, tap the axle stub lightly inward with a brass punch/dead-blow mallet to dislodge splines, and disconnect the outer tie rod end from the knuckle.

    Never strike bare CV axle threads with a steel hammer, which will mushroom threads.

    Apply penetrating oil to the splines if seized.

    Steering knuckle

    Remove the lower ball joint pinch bolt and nut, pry the lower control arm down to release the ball joint stud, and separate the steering knuckle from the lower strut pinch clamp to remove the knuckle from the vehicle.

    Support the CV axle so it does not over-extend or pull the inner tripod joint out of the transaxle housing.

    Spread the strut clamp slit slightly with a small pry tool or wedge to slide the knuckle collar off the strut body easily.

    Wheel hub & snap ring

    On a hydraulic press (or using an on-vehicle press tool), support the knuckle face and press the wheel hub out of the bearing. Remove the inner snap ring from the knuckle bore.

    Pressing out the hub will almost always tear the bearing apart, leaving the outer half of the inner bearing race on the hub stem.

    If reusing the original hub, use a bearing splitter/puller to remove the remaining inner race from the hub shank without gouging the polished surface.

    Wheel bearing & knuckle bore

    Press the old wheel bearing cartridge out of the knuckle housing, clean the bore thoroughly with brake cleaner and a wire brush, and inspect the snap ring groove.

    Ensure the snap ring was completely removed before applying press force, or the knuckle casing will crack.

    Apply a light film of assembly oil or anti-seize inside the knuckle bore to aid press-in.

    New wheel bearing & snap ring

    Identify the magnetic encoder side of the new bearing (usually dark rubber/magnetic face). Press the new bearing into the knuckle by applying force ONLY to the OUTER bearing race until fully seated against the shoulder stop. Install a new snap ring.

    CRITICAL: The magnetic encoder side MUST face INWARD toward the ABS wheel speed sensor cavity. If installed backwards, ABS/ESC fault codes will set immediately. Never press on the inner race or bearing seals when pressing the bearing into the knuckle.

    Verify that the snap ring is 100% seated in its groove all 360 degrees around.

    Wheel hub

    Support the INNER race of the newly installed bearing from underneath, and press the wheel hub into the bearing bore until fully seated.

    You MUST support the bottom inner race when pressing in the hub. Failure to support the inner race will separate and ruin the new bearing instantly.

    Rotate the hub by hand after pressing to verify smooth, bind-free rotation.

    Suspension & knuckle reassembly

    Reinstall the steering knuckle onto the vehicle: insert the CV axle into the hub splines, slide the knuckle onto the strut body, insert the ball joint into the knuckle, and reconnect the tie rod end.

    Ensure the strut alignment tab seats fully into the slot in the knuckle collar.

    Torque ball joint pinch nut to 83 Nm (61 lb-ft), strut pinch bolt to 90 Nm (66 lb-ft), and tie rod nut to 48 Nm (35 lb-ft).

    Brakes & ABS sensor

    Reinstall the ABS wheel speed sensor and brake line bracket. Reinstall the brake rotor and caliper anchor bracket assembly.

    Torque caliper anchor bracket bolts to 175 Nm (129 lb-ft).

    Ensure the brake splash shield does not contact the brake rotor face.

    Front axle nut

    Thread on a new OEM 32mm front axle spindle nut. Torque in two distinct stages: Stage 1 to 80 Nm (59 lb-ft), then Stage 2 apply an additional 90 degrees of rotation.

    Always use a new axle nut. Never use an impact wrench to torque the axle nut, as this can shock and damage internal bearing raceways. Do not apply vehicle weight to the wheel bearing until the axle nut is fully torqued to stage 2.

    Have an assistant firmly press the brake pedal to hold the hub stationary while torquing the axle nut.

    Road wheel & final verification

    Reinstall the road wheel, thread lug nuts, lower vehicle to the ground, and torque lug nuts in a star pattern to 135 Nm (100 lb-ft). Perform a test drive to verify quiet operation and confirm no ABS warnings.

Gotchas

  • The front wheel bearing features an integrated ABS magnetic encoder ring on ONE side only. Installing the bearing backwards (magnetic encoder facing outward toward the hub flange rather than inward toward the ABS sensor cavity) will cause immediate, un-clearable ABS and AdvanceTrac/Traction Control warning lights, requiring the newly installed bearing to be destroyed and replaced again.
  • Pressing the wheel hub into the bearing without properly supporting the underside INNER bearing race will force the inner race out of the bearing assembly, immediately destroying the internal balls/cages of the brand-new bearing.
  • The front axle spindle nut (32mm) is a torque-to-yield prevailing torque fastener specified for single use only. Reusing old axle nuts can cause loss of clamping force, loosening, and rapid premature wheel bearing failure.
  • Ford OEM chrome-capped lug nuts are notorious for swelling due to internal moisture corrosion between the steel core and outer aluminum cap. A standard 19mm socket may not fit; having a 19.5mm half-size flip socket on hand prevents rounding of lug nut caps.

Common mistakes

  • Attempting to press the bearing out of the knuckle before removing the large internal snap ring, resulting in a fractured or ruined steering knuckle.
  • Using an impact wrench to drive the axle nut fully home instead of using a calibrated torque wrench and angle gauge. This can gall CV axle threads and overload the bearing raceways.
  • Letting the CV axle halfshaft hang unsupported after separating the knuckle, pulling the inner plunge tripod joint out of the transmission cup or tearing the rubber CV boot.
  • Pressing the new bearing into the knuckle by applying load to the inner race instead of the outer steel race, causing brinelling / indentations on the new bearing tracks before the car even leaves the jack stands.
It's a Good Idea To... Greasy tips and useful while-you're-in-there advice.

When you press the new bearing in, support the outer race only—load goes to the steel outer ring, not the inner race or seals. When you press the hub back in, support the inner race from underneath. This is backwards from what your brain wants to do. Get it wrong and you'll wreck a brand-new $80–120 bearing on your first rotation. Verify the magnetic encoder side of the bearing faces inward toward the ABS sensor cavity before you press—if it goes in backwards, you'll get an immediate ABS fault code and have to destroy the bearing and start over.

You Already Have a Screw Loose. Your Car Shouldn't. Final checks before you call it done.

This is not a casual Saturday job unless you have press access and have done suspension work before. The magnetic encoder orientation alone will bite you if you're not careful, and the bearing press procedure has zero margin for error. Torque specs are firm, fasteners are one-time-use where specified, and hand tools are mandatory for the final axle nut stage. Take your time, support the right components at the right time, and verify orientation before you apply force.
