2013–2016 Ford Escape - 1.6L I4 EcoBoost / JQMA
Oil change on a 2014 Escape 1.6L EcoBoost. Straightforward job, but there's a composite undertray in the way that'll make you wish engineers thought about maintenance for 10 seconds. Plan 30–60 minutes, and don't grab a 5-quart jug thinking it'll work—this thing holds 4.3 quarts, not the 5.7 the 2.0L needs.
How Rough Is This Going to Be? Know what you're getting into.
You're pulling the entire lower engine splash shield (7 to 9 T30 Torx screws plus two 7mm/8mm fasteners on the sides) to reach the oil pan and filter. The filter sits on the front-lower block face with tight access. Drain, swap, refill, reset the maintenance monitor via a two-pedal floor stomp. This is beginner-level, but the undertray is the only real friction point.
Save Another Trip to the Parts Store Clips, seals, fluids, and the little stuff people forget.
The oil filler cap venting step (pull the dipstick an inch while draining) prevents glugging and splashing. Skip it and watch oil back up. Also: that dual-pedal reset at the end—press brake and accelerator simultaneously for 20–25 seconds with the engine off to clear the instrument cluster reminder. Forgetting it means the light bugs you until next service.
Here's Where It Gets Greasy The procedure, pain points, and common ways this job fights back.
Number one: leaving the old oil filter O-ring stuck on the block when you install the new filter. Double gasketing will blow out on startup and trash the engine. Inspect the old filter and wipe the mounting flange clean. Number two: dumping the entire 5-quart jug in because you didn't read the label. This motor takes 4.0 quarts on the first fill, then check the dipstick and top off to 4.3. Number three: using an impact driver on the splash shield screws and instantly destroying those plastic retainers.

Vehicle Safety
Drive or idle the engine until it reaches warm operating temperature (suspending contaminants in oil), then park vehicle on level ground and shut off engine. Set parking brake and chock rear wheels.
Exhaust components and engine oil will be hot. Wear protective gloves and eye protection.
Warm oil drains faster and carries more suspended particulate.

Chassis Lift
Elevate front of vehicle using hydraulic jack and support securely on jack stands at factory pinch weld points (or drive up on automotive ramps).
Never get underneath a vehicle supported only by a hydraulic jack.

Engine Splash Shield / Undertray
Remove under-engine aerodynamic splash shield. Remove the 7 to 9 T30 Torx screws and the two 7mm/8mm hex screws located along the outer edge near the wheel wells. Lower shield and slide it out from under the vehicle.
Do not use high-torque impact drivers on reinstall to avoid stripping the red plastic speed nut inserts.
Inspect red/white plastic retention clips in the subframe; replace any missing or cracked retainers.

Oil Fill Cap & Dipstick
Open hood, remove the oil filler cap, and pull the yellow dipstick up an inch to allow atmospheric venting.
Venting prevents 'glugging' and splashing as oil drains from the pan.

Oil Pan Drain Plug
Position drain pan underneath the engine oil pan drain plug. Using a 13mm socket, loosen and remove the drain plug counter-clockwise. Allow old engine oil to completely drain into the pan.
Hot oil drains quickly and with high initial velocity. Keep hands clear of oil trajectory.

Oil Pan Drain Plug
Clean the drain plug threads and inspect the integrated rubber O-ring seal. If degraded or damaged, replace the O-ring/plug. Once draining slows to an occasional drip, reinstall the drain plug and torque to 28 Nm (21 lb-ft).
Do not overtighten drain plug into the aluminum/steel oil pan to avoid stripped pan threads.

Oil Filter
Reposition drain pan beneath the spin-on oil filter located at the front/lower section of the engine block. Loosen filter counter-clockwise using an oil filter wrench, then spin it off by hand.
Oil will drain from filter base as it is unthreaded. Keep catch pan directly underneath.
Wipe down surrounding subframe and wiring harnesses that catch dripping oil.

Oil Filter Mounting Flange
Inspect the old filter to ensure the rubber gasket came off with it. Wipe the engine mounting flange clean. Apply a light film of clean engine oil to the rubber gasket of the new Motorcraft FL-910S filter.
Double gasketing (leaving the old O-ring stuck on the block) will cause immediate high-pressure oil blowout and severe engine destruction.

New Oil Filter (FL-910S)
Thread new oil filter onto the mounting stud clockwise by hand until the gasket contacts the mating surface. Tighten an additional 3/4 to 1 full turn by hand. Do not over-tighten with a wrench.
Over-tightening can crush or tear the rubber gasket.

Engine Oil Fill
Place funnel into the oil fill neck and pour in 4.0 quarts of SAE 5W-20 motor oil. Reinstall oil fill cap.
Do not immediately add 5+ quarts. Total capacity is 4.3 quarts; adding too much at once causes overfill.

Engine Operation & Leak Check
Start engine and let it idle for 1-2 minutes. Verify the instrument cluster low oil pressure light turns off within 3-5 seconds. Inspect under the vehicle for any leaks around the drain plug and oil filter.
If the low oil pressure warning light remains illuminated past 5 seconds, shut down engine immediately.

Engine Splash Shield & Vehicle Lowering
Shut off engine. Reinstall under-engine splash shield using the T30 Torx and 7mm/8mm fasteners, tightening snug by hand. Lower vehicle safely to level ground.

Oil Dipstick Final Level Check
Allow vehicle to sit on level ground for 5 minutes. Pull dipstick, wipe clean, reinsert fully, and pull again to verify level. Top off with remaining oil until reading reaches the crosshatched/upper mark (approx. 4.3 quarts total).
Do not overfill past maximum mark on dipstick.

Intelligent Oil Life Monitor (IOLM)
Reset the Intelligent Oil Life Monitor: Turn ignition to ON (engine OFF). Simultaneously press the brake pedal and accelerator pedal all the way to the floor and hold for 20-25 seconds until the instrument cluster message displays 'Oil change reset complete'. Release pedals and turn ignition off.
Do not start engine during the pedal reset procedure.
Gotchas
- The entire composite/felt lower undertray (engine splash shield) must be removed. Skipping this or attempting to bend the shield leads to cracked splash shields and unmanageable oil spills.
- The red plastic nut inserts / grommets in the subframe for the T30 splash shield bolts commonly strip, spin, or rust seize. Hand-thread each bolt carefully before tightening.
- Capacity confusion: 2.0L EcoBoost Escapes require 5.7 quarts of 5W-30, whereas this 1.6L EcoBoost requires only 4.3 quarts of 5W-20. Pouring a full 5-quart jug or following 2.0L guides will overfill the crankcase.
Common mistakes
- Failing to check that the old oil filter O-ring seal detached from the block, causing a double gasket and catastrophic oil loss on startup.
- Using high-torque cordless power tools to reinstall the splash shield T30 screws, instantly stripping the fragile plastic subframe retainers.
- Forgetting the dual-pedal reset procedure (pressing both accelerator and brake for 20+ seconds) to clear the oil maintenance reminder in the instrument cluster.

Before reinstalling the splash shield, inspect the red plastic nut inserts in the subframe. If any are cracked, missing, or seized, you'll strip them the moment you thread a T30 bolt. Hand-thread everything carefully and stop when snug—don't pull out a cordless impact driver or you're buying a new undertray.
You Already Have a Screw Loose. Your Car Shouldn't. Final checks before you call it done.
Not a hard morning. This is a driveway job as long as you respect the undertray (remove it all, don't fight it), double-check that old filter O-ring, and don't overfill. Warm oil drains fast, so stay clear of the hot exit. Reset the monitor on the way out, and you're done.
