Trim and body style don't matter; platform and axle type do. New hub assembly runs about 1 to 2 hours per side, assuming fasteners cooperate.

Brake dust shield. It sits between the knuckle and hub and has a notch for the ABS sensor. Leave it out or flip it backward, and you'll pull the hub twice. Three: letting the brake caliper hang by its rubber hose, which can separate the internal hose lining. Use a wire hanger or bungee to hang it from the coil spring. Four: skipping the knuckle bore cleanup, letting rust scale seat the new hub crooked, causing brake rotor runout and pulsation.

Procedure

    Loosen the axle nut while the vehicle is still on the ground with the center cap removed, or have an assistant firmly depress the brake pedal to prevent the axle from spinning.

    Torque the 35mm/36mm axle spindle nut to 100 ft-lbs (135 Nm). Torque wheel lug nuts in a 5-lug star pattern to 100 ft-lbs (135 Nm).

Gotchas

  • 12-Point Fasteners: The three hub-to-knuckle mounting bolts have 12-point heads (13mm). Attempting to use a standard 6-point socket will round off the bolt heads and require extraction.
  • Outdated Torque Specs from Older Jeeps: Older Jeep solid axles (XJ, TJ, YJ) required 175 ft-lbs on the axle nut. The Wrangler JK spec is significantly lower at 100 ft-lbs (135 Nm). Applying 175 ft-lbs will over-stress the stub shaft threads and cause premature bearing failure.
  • Brake Dust Shield Orientation: The brake dust shield is sandwiched between the knuckle and the hub bearing assembly. If omitted or installed backwards, the entire hub must be removed again to correct it.
  • ABS Sensor Routing: If the wheel speed sensor wire is not clipped properly into all factory retainers, it will contact the rotating tire, wheel, or brake rotor during suspension cycling or steering lock, triggering ABS/traction control dash warnings.

Common mistakes

  • Failing to clean rust scale from the knuckle bore before installing the new unit bearing, causing the new hub to seat crooked and inducing rotor runout and brake pulsation.
  • Stripping the 21mm brake caliper bracket bolts or forgetting threadlocker; these bolts require high torque (120 ft-lbs) to remain secure.
  • Hanging the brake caliper by its rubber flex hose, which can cause internal hose lining separation or sudden hydraulic failure.
  • Using an impact wrench to drive the axle nut fully home instead of using a calibrated torque wrench, risking thread stretching or improper bearing preload.

Apply anti-seize to the knuckle bore and axle splines before pressing the new hub home. Galvanic corrosion between aluminum (knuckle) and steel (hub/axle) will seize the bearing solid in 2–3 years, turning a 90-minute swap into a stuck-hub nightmare. A thin, even coat now saves future pain. Don't slather the ABS sensor face or bolt threads—just the bore and splines.
