Your 2012 Wrangler's front brake pads and rotors are shot. This is a solid driveway job—1 to 2 hours if the bolts don't decide to fuse themselves to the knuckle. Grab a 1/2-inch breaker bar because those caliper bracket bolts are torqued to 120 ft-lbs and threadlocked from the factory.
How Rough Is This Going to Be? Know what you're getting into.
You're replacing a pair of 302 mm vented rotors (standard factory spec) and a full brake pad set. The work breaks into three phases: caliper removal and pad extraction, rotor swap with hub cleaning, and reassembly with torque-critical fasteners. The caliper slide pins are the trickiest bit—they spin freely while you're tightening the 13 mm bolts, so you'll need a thin 15 mm wrench to hold the pin flats steady. Jack the front end, set jack stands, chock the rear wheels. Do not skip this part.
Save Another Trip to the Parts Store Clips, seals, fluids, and the little stuff people forget.
Pump the brake pedal 3 to 5 times before you even start the engine after this is done. I mean it. Your first push on the pedal will feel like a dead zone if you don't. Also, siphon brake fluid from the master cylinder reservoir before you compress the pistons—it'll overflow onto your engine bay and destroy wiring if you don't. And those thin factory star retainers on the wheel studs? Cut them off and throw them away. They're assembly-line trash that will prevent your new rotors from sitting flush.

Hanging the caliper by its brake line instead of wiring it to the spring (you'll tear the hose). Over-torquing those 26 ft-lbs slide pin bolts because you think 'brake' means 'tighten hard'—it doesn't; 26 is the number. Confusing the 120 ft-lbs bracket bolts with the 26 ft-lbs pin bolts and torquing everything wrong. Letting brake grease touch the pads or rotor. Not torquing lug nuts in a star pattern once the wheel is back on the ground. Forgetting that factory threadlocker on the 21 mm bracket bolts means you need serious leverage to break them free—a standard 3/8-inch ratchet won't cut it.

Front Wheel Lug Nuts
Park vehicle on a level surface, engage parking brake, chock rear wheels, and crack front lug nuts loose 1/2 turn using a 19 mm socket.
Do not remove lug nuts completely while vehicle is on the ground.

Front Wheels & Tires
Lift front axle using a hydraulic floor jack under the axle housing / differential jack points, and lower onto sturdy jack stands. Remove front lug nuts and wheels.
Never work under a vehicle supported solely by a hydraulic jack.
Inspect undercarriage and brake lines for fluid leaks or damage while wheels are off.

Brake Fluid Master Cylinder Reservoir
Inspect brake fluid level in the master cylinder reservoir under the hood; siphon off fluid if filled to the max line to prevent overflow when compressing pistons.
Brake fluid damages automotive paint immediately. Wipe any spills immediately with water and clean rag.
Leave master cylinder cap resting loosely over the opening to prevent contamination while allowing displaced air/fluid to vent.

Front Brake Caliper Slide Pin Bolts
Remove the upper and lower caliper slide pin bolts (13 mm socket) while preventing the guide pin from spinning using a 15 mm thin open-end wrench on the pin flats.
Do not round off the slide pin flats by using an oversized or improperly seated wrench.
Turning the steering wheel towards the side you are working on gives easier access to the rear-facing fastener heads.

Front Brake Caliper Housing
Lift caliper off the brake bracket assembly and suspend it securely from the front coil spring using a caliper hanger or heavy wire hook.
Never allow the brake caliper to dangle by the flexible rubber brake hose; doing so can cause internal rupture or line failure.

Front Brake Pads
Remove inboard and outboard brake pads from the caliper mounting bracket.
Note the orientation of the wear indicator squealer tab on the pads for correct reinstallation matching.

Caliper Mounting Adapter / Bracket
Remove the two 21 mm caliper mounting bracket bolts from the back of the steering knuckle using a 1/2-inch drive ratchet or breaker bar, then remove bracket.
These bolts are torqued from the factory to 120 ft-lbs with threadlocker and may require significant leverage to break free.
Clean old threadlocker from the bolt threads using a wire brush before reassembly.

Front Brake Rotor & Hub Face
Check wheel studs for factory sheet metal star retaining clips. Cut and remove any clips present using side cutters and discard them. Pull rotor off hub assembly.
Factory retaining clips are for assembly line transport only and must not be reinstalled; they prevent aftermarket and flush rotors/wheels from seating flat.
If the rotor is seized to the hub with corrosion, strike the rotor hat firmly between wheel studs with a hammer to shock rust loose.

Wheel Hub Flange
Clean wheel hub mating surface and center hub snout thoroughly with a wire brush to bare metal. Apply a light film of anti-seize around the center pilot hub.
Do not get anti-seize on wheel studs or rotor friction contact surfaces.
Even minor rust scale on the hub face will induce excessive lateral runout and brake pedal pulsation.

New Front Brake Rotor
Clean shipping oil/coating from new brake rotor surfaces using brake cleaner and clean rag. Mount new rotor onto the hub flange and install one lug nut finger-tight to hold it flush.
Fully coated/painted rotors do not require degreasing on painted non-friction areas.

Caliper Bracket & Hardware Clips
Clean caliper bracket pad abutment channels with a wire brush and brake cleaner. Install new stainless steel abutment hardware clips into the bracket.
Ensure new clips are pressed completely flat into the bracket channels so they do not rub against the rotor rim.

Caliper Mounting Adapter / Bracket Bolts
Reinstall caliper mounting bracket onto the steering knuckle. Apply medium threadlocker to the 21 mm bolts and torque both bolts to 120 ft-lbs (163 N·m).
Critical safety fastener: Always use a calibrated torque wrench to achieve 120 ft-lbs.

Caliper Slide Pins & Rubber Boots
Pull out caliper slide pins from the bracket boots, clean old grease, inspect rubber boots for tears, re-lubricate pins with high-temperature silicone ceramic brake grease, and reinsert.
Do not over-pack grease into the slide pin bores, as hydraulic lock can prevent the pin from sliding freely.
Ensure the rubber dust boots snap securely into the pin grooves.

Front Brake Pads
Apply a thin layer of brake lubricant to the pad ear contact points on the abutment clips. Install new inboard and outboard pads into the bracket channels.
Do not allow brake grease to touch the pad friction material or rotor face.
Pads should slide smoothly by hand in the bracket channels without binding.

Caliper Piston & Boot
Compress the caliper piston fully back into the caliper housing using a piston compressor tool or C-clamp over an old brake pad. Ensure piston dust boot seats flat without pinching.
Check master cylinder reservoir to ensure fluid does not overflow as piston is compressed.

Caliper Slide Pin Bolts
Slide caliper housing over new pads into position on bracket. Thread in 13 mm slide pin bolts, hold 15 mm pin flats with thin wrench, and torque both bolts to 26 ft-lbs (35 N·m).
Do not over-torque slide pin bolts; 26 ft-lbs is sufficient and over-torquing can shear the guide pin threads.

Front Wheels & Lug Nuts
Remove temporary lug nut from rotor, remount wheel and tire, and hand-thread lug nuts. Lower vehicle partially until tire contacts ground, then torque lug nuts to 95 ft-lbs in a crisscross star pattern.
Always torque lug nuts in a crisscross pattern with the vehicle resting on the ground.

Opposite Front Brake Assembly
Repeat procedure on opposite side front wheel assembly.
Always replace brake pads and rotors in complete axle pairs.

Brake Hydraulic System & Pedal
Before starting engine or driving, pump the brake pedal 3 to 5 times until firm resistance is felt. Check master cylinder reservoir fluid level and top up to MAX line with DOT 3/4 fluid as needed.
CRITICAL: Failure to pump brake pedal prior to driving will result in zero initial braking power and potential collision.
Perform recommended pad-and-rotor bedding-in procedure on initial test drive.
Gotchas
- The caliper slide pins will rotate freely when tightening or loosening the 13 mm slide pin bolts. You must use a slim / thin 15 mm open-end wrench to hold the slide pin flats while turning the 13 mm bolt.
- Factory thin star retaining washers on wheel studs hold the rotor during factory assembly. If left on with replacement rotors or aftermarket wheels, the wheel or rotor will not seat flush, leading to high-speed wheel vibration and severe rotor runout.
- Front caliper bracket bolts (21 mm) are factory secured with threadlocker and torqued to 120 ft-lbs. A standard 3/8-inch ratchet will not provide adequate leverage; a 1/2-inch breaker bar or impact wrench is necessary.
- Over-greasing the slide pin cavity can create hydraulic lock (air/grease pocket) inside the blind bore, pushing the slide pin out and preventing the caliper from floating smoothly.
Common mistakes
- Forgetting to pump the brake pedal before taking the vehicle out of park, resulting in complete initial loss of brake pressure.
- Confusing front caliper bracket torque (120 ft-lbs) with rear caliper bracket torque (55 ft-lbs) or slide pin bolt torque (26 ft-lbs).
- Failing to wire-brush corrosion from the wheel hub face, causing newly installed rotors to wobble (runout) and vibrate under braking.
- Letting the heavy front caliper hang by its flexible rubber brake line, tearing or compromising the inner hose liner.
- Not monitoring master cylinder fluid level while compressing the caliper pistons, resulting in brake fluid overflow onto engine bay wiring and paint.

Wire-brush the wheel hub face until it's bare metal before installing new rotors. Corrosion under a rotor is the leading cause of brake pulsation and vibration. Spend two minutes here; save yourself a callback. Light anti-seize on the hub pilot snout helps prevent the rotor from welding itself to the hub over time, but keep it off the studs and friction surfaces.
You Already Have a Screw Loose. Your Car Shouldn't. Final checks before you call it done.
Once both sides are done and you've pumped the pedal firm, take a slow test drive in an empty parking lot and do gentle stops before hitting the road. Bedding-in new pads and rotors takes a few miles of light to moderate braking—no panic stops yet. Check the master cylinder level one more time after the first drive. This job is real, but it's not magic. Take your time with torque specs, use jack stands, and don't skip the hub cleaning.
