2012 Ford Escape
This is the routine oil change on the 2012 Escape's I4, V6, or hybrid Duratec engines, and on this platform it's genuinely easy — nothing exotic underneath, just the usual drain-and-swap. How Rough Is This Going to Be? Know what you're getting into.
Warm the engine, get it level, set the brake, and kill the ignition completely before you're anywhere near the pan — on the hybrid that means confirming it's out of READY mode, not just quiet. Drain plug comes out first, then the filter. The estimate on the page assumes nothing's seized and you're not chasing a stripped plug or a filter that dumped oil across the subframe on the way off. Inspect the drain plug's gasket while it's out; if it's cracked or hardened, that's a five-minute delay to grab a replacement, not a reason to reuse it.

Have a catch pan positioned before you crack anything loose, and a clean shop towel for the filter mounting surface — it needs to be actually clean, not oil-smeared, before the new filter goes on. Grab a replacement drain plug gasket or the whole plug if the old one looks rough. And don't forget to physically check that the old filter's O-ring came off the engine with the filter instead of staying behind.

The big one is double-gasketing: the old filter's O-ring stays stuck to the engine, the new filter goes on over it, and the seal fails almost immediately once the engine runs. The other is the drain plug — its 13 mm head is shallow, and an ill-fitting socket or wrench rounds it off fast, while cranking it down too hard strips the threads in the aluminum pan. On the hybrid, servicing it with the ignition still live risks the engine auto-starting while you're underneath it, which is its own separate problem entirely.
Gotchas
- The rubber O-ring from the old spin-on oil filter frequently sticks to the engine mounting flange upon removal. If a new filter is installed over the old gasket, it will cause catastrophic high-pressure oil blowout within seconds of starting the engine.
- The 13mm drain plug head is shallow and can round easily if using an ill-fitting 12-point socket or 5/8-inch wrench. Overtightening into the aluminum oil pan can easily strip threads.
- On 2.5L Hybrid models, leaving the ignition in the key-on or READY state allows the powertrain control module to automatically start the internal combustion engine at any time to maintain high-voltage battery state of charge.
- When spinning off the oil filter on 2.5L and 3.0L models, escaping oil often drains directly onto the front subframe or lower engine crossmember channel. (source not machine-verified)

Before you thread on the new filter, run a finger around the mounting flange on the engine and make sure the old rubber O-ring isn't still sitting there. Installing a new filter over a leftover gasket causes a high-pressure oil blowout within seconds of startup — check it every time, not just when something looks off.

Once the new filter's snug and the drain plug is torqued to spec, run the engine briefly and check underneath for drips at both the plug and the filter before you call it done. Top off and recheck the level once it's settled. That's the job.
