Front wheel bearing on your 2011 Equinox is toast. This is a moderate Saturday job—1 to 2 hours per side—as long as rust hasn't permanently welded the hub to the knuckle. You'll need jack stands, a torque wrench, and patience with the corroded fasteners.
How Rough Is This Going to Be? Know what you're getting into.
You're pulling the caliper, rotor, and CV axle nut, then extracting the old hub bearing assembly from the steering knuckle bore. The Equinox front hubs love to seize up due to galvanic corrosion, so be ready to tap it loose with a brass drift or pull it with a hub shocker tool. Then you're cleaning the knuckle bore, installing the new bearing cartridge, and torquing everything back to spec. The magnetic encoder ring on the new hub's inboard seal is integrated into the ABS system—don't touch it with magnetic tools or let metal shavings near it, or you'll have a check-engine light surprise.
Save Another Trip to the Parts Store Clips, seals, fluids, and the little stuff people forget.
A caliper hanger (or heavy wire) to support the caliper so it doesn't dangle on the brake hose and rupture the line. Brake cleaner to flush corrosion out of the knuckle bore. A brass punch and hammer, because striking the CV axle shaft directly with steel will mushroom the threads. And a calibrated torque wrench—the axle nut must hit 151 ft-lbs dead-on, not eyeballed with an impact gun.

Using an impact wrench on the final axle nut torque and over-tightening, which destroys the bearing preload within a few thousand miles. Hammering the CV axle shaft tip directly instead of using a brass drift, mushrooming the threads beyond salvation. Leaving corrosion buildup in the knuckle bore so the new hub sits crooked, causing rotor runout and ABS sensor headaches. And letting the caliper hang by its hydraulic hose—flex hoses don't flex like that and will fail.

Front Wheel & CV Axle Nut
Loosen axle spindle nut and wheel lug nuts while vehicle is resting firmly on the ground, or after safely raising if using a high-torque impact wrench.
Do not apply excessive side load on wheel bearings if vehicle weight is resting on loose axle nut.
Using a 1/2-inch impact gun makes removing the 36mm axle nut straightforward once the wheel is off.

Chassis & Wheel
Safely raise front of vehicle using floor jack on designated lift points and support securely on jack stands. Remove front wheel.
Always ensure jack stands are placed under factory subframe or pinch-weld support locations.

Front Brake Caliper
Remove the 2 brake caliper guide pin bolts and lift caliper body off bracket. Secure caliper to front strut spring using an S-hook.
Do not allow brake caliper to hang by hydraulic flexible rubber hose; doing so can cause internal hose failure.

Brake Caliper Bracket
Remove the 2 caliper bracket mounting bolts (18mm) and remove caliper mounting bracket and brake pads as an assembly.
These bolts have factory threadlocker and require firm leverage with a long ratchet or breaker bar.

Brake Rotor
Remove the T30 Torx rotor retaining screw and slide brake rotor off hub studs.
If screw is seized, avoid rounding out the head. Use an impact screwdriver or strike the bit firmly with a hammer before turning.

CV Axle Spline
Remove the 36mm axle nut and washer. Use a brass drift and hammer (or axle push puller) to press the CV axle splined shaft inward 1/2 inch to ensure splines are completely free from the hub.
Do not strike CV axle shaft tip directly with a steel hammer; mushroomed threads will ruin the axle.

Hub Mounting Fasteners
Access the 3 hub assembly mounting bolts from behind the steering knuckle (13mm) and remove all three fasteners.
Turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock to gain better ratchet clearance behind the knuckle.

Wheel Bearing Hub & Dust Shield
Remove old hub bearing assembly and brake dust shield from the steering knuckle bore.
Do not pry aggressively against the aluminum steering knuckle sealing lip to avoid gouging.
If rusted tight, thread an old bolt from the backside and strike it with a hammer against a steel plate, or use a hub puller/slide hammer.

Steering Knuckle Bore
Clean all corrosion, scale, and road debris from the steering knuckle bore and brake dust shield mating surfaces using a wire brush and brake cleaner.
Ensure the ABS sensor tip bore is clean and clear of metal shavings.
Apply a very light film of anti-seize around the outer hub pilot diameter to ease future replacement.

New Hub Assembly & Dust Shield
Position brake dust shield and install new wheel bearing hub assembly into steering knuckle, aligning splines onto CV axle shaft.
Protect the magnetic encoder ring on the inner hub face from magnetic tools, dirt, or impact.

Hub Mounting Bolts
Install the 3 hub mounting bolts from the back of the knuckle and tighten evenly in a triangle pattern. Torque to 70 ft-lbs (95 N·m).

CV Axle Nut
Install new front axle nut and washer onto CV axle threads. Snug down until hub is fully seated.
Do not perform final full-torque tightening while vehicle weight is resting unsupported on an un-torqued bearing.

Brake Rotor
Reinstall brake rotor onto hub and secure with T30 Torx screw. Tighten to 106 in-lbs (12 N·m).

Brake Caliper Bracket
Reinstall brake caliper bracket. Torque the 18mm caliper bracket bolts to 140 ft-lbs (190 N·m).
Apply medium-strength blue threadlocker if original bolts do not retain pre-applied factory locking patch.

Brake Caliper
Reinstall brake caliper over pads. Tighten caliper guide pin bolts to 20 ft-lbs (27 N·m).

CV Axle Spindle Nut
Torque front CV axle spindle nut to 151 ft-lbs (205 N·m) using a calibrated 1/2-inch drive torque wrench.
Improper axle nut torque will cause premature bearing failure or ABS sensor air gap errors.
Hold the rotor stationary by inserting a sturdy screwdriver into the rotor cooling vanes against the caliper bracket while torquing.

Wheel & Lug Nuts
Mount front wheel, hand-thread lug nuts, lower vehicle to ground, and torque lug nuts in a star pattern to 140 ft-lbs (190 N·m). Pump brake pedal before driving.
Always pump brake pedal several times to seat brake pads before putting vehicle into gear.
Gotchas
- The magnetic encoder ring (ABS tone ring) is integrated directly into the inboard rubber grease seal of the hub assembly. Touching it with magnetic tools, prying against it, or allowing metal grinding dust to stick to it will trigger instant ABS / StabiliTrak warning codes (e.g. C0035 / C0040).
- The steel hub body chemically seizes (galvanic corrosion) inside the knuckle bore on GM Theta platforms. Standard hammer blows on the hub flange frequently separate the outer hub from the bearing cartridge, leaving the outer race stuck inside the knuckle. Use a hub shocker tool or the push-bolt method against the knuckle ears to press it out intact.
- The 2011 Chevrolet Equinox uses M14x1.5 wheel studs, requiring a 140 lb-ft wheel lug nut torque specification. Do not confuse this with older 1st-generation Equinox models (100 lb-ft) or 2010 models (125 lb-ft).
Common mistakes
- Using an impact wrench to tighten the new axle nut rather than a calibrated torque wrench. Over-torquing or under-torquing the axle nut ruins internal bearing preload, causing bearing failure within several thousand miles.
- Hammering directly on the CV axle center shaft with a steel hammer, mushrooming the axle stub threads and requiring CV axle shaft replacement.
- Failing to thoroughly wire-brush the knuckle bore and brake dust shield. Corrosion build-up prevents the new hub from seating perpendicular to the knuckle, creating brake rotor runout and premature sensor air gap issues.
- Allowing the heavy dual-piston front brake caliper to dangle by the hydraulic brake flex hose during hub removal.

Hold the rotor stationary by wedging a screwdriver into the cooling vanes against the caliper bracket while you torque the axle nut to 151 ft-lbs. Saves you from accidentally spinning the whole assembly. Also, thread a Grade 8 bolt from the knuckle's backside and strike it against a steel block if the old hub won't budge—it's cleaner than hammering on the hub flange and separating the cartridge inside the bore.
