Front brake pads and rotors on your 2011 Equinox—a solid intermediate job that'll run you 1–2 hours if the lug nuts cooperate. The platform is consistent across 2010–2017 with any engine and drivetrain, so if you've got a 2.4L, 3.0L, or 3.6L under the hood, this is your play.
How Rough Is This Going to Be? Know what you're getting into.
You're removing wheels, unbolting a caliper, pulling a bracket, swapping rotors, and reinstalling pads. The main gotchas: those caliper bracket bolts are torqued to 140 lb-ft with factory threadlocker—they don't budge without a 1/2" breaker bar. The lug nuts themselves are also 140 lb-ft (higher than most cars), and the original two-piece capped nuts are prone to swelling, so your 22mm socket needs to be an exact fit. Rust on the hub face and inside the bracket will bite you if you skip cleaning.
Save Another Trip to the Parts Store Clips, seals, fluids, and the little stuff people forget.
Pump the brake pedal after you compress the piston and before you drive anywhere—otherwise you've got no brakes. Siphon brake fluid from the reservoir if it's topped off, or you'll have overflow when the piston retracts. Clean the T30 rotor retaining screw hole hard before loosening it; corrosion will strip the head in a heartbeat. And grab a caliper hanger or bungee—never let the caliper hang by its brake hose.

Letting the caliper hang unsupported by the hose is the fast track to internal hose damage. Skipping hub-face cleaning guarantees rotor runout and brake pulsation. Using the wrong grease on the pins and boots will lock them up. And if you under-torque those lug nuts, the rotor can distort and you're back to vibration city. Don't cheap out on torque specs—this platform runs 140 lb-ft for a reason.

Front Wheel Assemblies
Loosen front wheel lug nuts slightly while vehicle is on the ground using a 22mm socket. Safely raise vehicle and secure front axle on jack stands on approved subframe lift points. Remove wheel assemblies.
Never work under a vehicle supported solely by a hydraulic jack.
Check lug nuts for casing deformation caused by swollen decorative chrome caps.

Master Cylinder Reservoir
Inspect brake fluid reservoir level in the engine bay and remove the cap. Siphon fluid if reservoir is completely full to prevent overflow when compressing the piston.
Brake fluid dissolves automotive paint.

Front Brake Caliper
Remove the two 14mm caliper guide pin bolts. If the guide pin rotates, hold the flats with a thin 18mm wrench. Lift caliper off mounting bracket and hang from coil spring using a caliper hanger.
Do not allow caliper to hang unsupported by the flexible hydraulic hose.

Brake Pads & Hardware
Remove old brake pads from the caliper mounting bracket. Remove old stainless abutment clips.
Note the orientation of inner brake pad wear indicator (situated at the top edge).

Caliper Mounting Bracket
Remove the two 18mm caliper bracket mounting bolts using a 1/2" breaker bar. Remove bracket from the steering knuckle.
These bolts have factory locking compound and require substantial breakaway force.

Front Brake Rotor
Remove T30 Torx rotor retaining screw. Remove the rotor from the hub flange. If stuck, tap the rotor hat between wheel studs with a dead-blow mallet.
Do not strike the wheel studs directly.
Firmly seat the T30 bit with a tap from a hammer before loosening to avoid stripping the fastener head.

Wheel Hub Face & Bracket Abutments
Thoroughly clean rust, scale, and corrosion from the wheel bearing hub mating face with a wire brush. Clean the caliper bracket pad abutment channels.
Debris between hub face and rotor causes lateral runout, leading to brake pedal pulsation.

New Brake Rotor
Clean packaging oil off new rotors using brake cleaner. Mount new rotor onto hub and secure with T30 Torx retaining screw. Tighten to 7 N·m (62 lb-in).

Caliper Guide Pins
Slide out caliper guide pins, clean off old grease, apply fresh silicone brake grease, and reinstall pins into rubber boots ensuring the boots seat properly into the pin grooves.
Do not use petroleum-based lubricants on rubber boots.

Caliper Mounting Bracket
Reinstall caliper mounting bracket using 18mm bolts (apply blue threadlocker if needed). Torque bolts to 190 N·m (140 lb-ft).

Brake Pads & Hardware
Install new stainless abutment clips onto bracket. Apply a light smear of silicone grease to the clip pad sliding surfaces. Install new inner pad (wear indicator top) and outer pad into bracket.
Do not allow grease to touch friction material or rotor braking surfaces.

Front Brake Caliper Piston
Compress caliper piston fully into caliper body using a caliper compressor or C-clamp with an old pad protecting the piston face.
Monitor master cylinder reservoir during piston compression to prevent fluid overflow.

Caliper Guide Pin Bolts
Position caliper over new pads and bracket. Install 14mm guide pin bolts and torque to 27 N·m (20 lb-ft).

Wheel Lug Nuts
Reinstall wheel assemblies, thread lug nuts by hand, and snug lightly. Lower vehicle to the ground and torque 22mm lug nuts to 190 N·m (140 lb-ft) in a star pattern.
Do not under-torque; the Theta Equinox platform specifies a high lug torque of 140 lb-ft.

Brake Hydraulic System & Reservoir
Pump brake pedal several times with engine off until firm pressure is established. Check and adjust DOT 3 brake fluid level in reservoir and install cap. Perform initial test drive and pad bedding procedure.
Do not move the vehicle before pumping the brake pedal to seat pads against the rotor.
Gotchas
- The wheel lug nut torque specification for the 2011 Equinox is 140 lb-ft (190 N·m) on M14x1.5 studs, significantly higher than standard passenger car 100 lb-ft specs. Under-torquing leads to loose wheels or rotor distortion.
- Caliper bracket mounting bolts are torqued to 140 lb-ft from the factory and secured with threadlocker; attempting removal with standard 3/8" ratchets can lead to rounded bolts or broken tools. A 1/2" breaker bar or impact is required.
- The T30 rotor retaining screw is prone to stripping if corrosion has seized the threads. Ensure the bit is fully tapped into the screw socket before applying turning force.
- Original GM two-piece capped lug nuts frequently swell due to internal rust between the steel core and stainless jacket; a standard 22mm socket may not seat properly, requiring a 22.5mm 'flip socket' or lug nut replacement.
Common mistakes
- Failing to pump the brake pedal before taking the vehicle out of park after piston compression, causing zero initial braking power.
- Neglecting to clean corrosion and scale from the wheel hub face, resulting in rotor runout and brake judder/vibration under braking.
- Letting the heavy front caliper dangle by its flexible rubber brake hose, creating internal hose stress or fitting damage.
- Using petroleum-based grease on slide pins and rubber boots, which swells and deteriorates the rubber, seizing the caliper pins.

Before reinstalling the bracket, yank out those caliper guide pins, wipe off the old gunk, and slather them with fresh silicone brake grease. Use silicone, not petroleum grease—petroleum degrades the rubber boots and seizes everything solid. Same goes for the pad abutment clips; light coating keeps them moving. Your brakes will feel smoother and won't squeak.

Once you've got new pads and rotors bolted down, compressed the piston, and torqued everything to spec, pump that brake pedal hard a few times to seat the pads.
